Introduction
« on: January 10, 2023, 06:11:18 PM »
AleXBR posted a link to the forum on advrider site, so I thought I'd support a more local site.
I'm Gareth and I love engineering.
Bikes, cars, 3D printing, gadgets, computers... yeah, count me in  ;D

I picked up a non-running RE ElectraX 500 a while ago, got it running and loved staring at it.

I never had any confidence in it, the RE forums are full of people asking what needs replacing/fixing next and (apart from spending £thousands) they spend their entire time mending and servicing.
The plan was to stick Japanese running gear on and motor in and then this XBR popped up...

An XBR with Mash running gear. Not quite what I want but a much closer starting point.
I also have a CB550F needing assembly, a pop-up headlamp Katana, RG350 YamaGamma and nitrous 1500 GoldWing... Reliant Rebel 700 with F750 tuned 850 motor, Kitten estate and Kitten saloon with 993cc Suzuki Swift motor. There's a Rialto and Swift in storage.

So... that's me  :o

Welcome, Gareth. Sweet XBR! I always wanted the 750 Katana with the popup headlight, ever size I was given a model kit as a kid.

When I bought the Wing I had the living room bay window removed and disabled access doors fitted  ;D
CB, XBR and Wing are in the living room, RG and GSX in the hall.

Wife and lad live 6000 miles away  ;D

I remember seeing that XBR for sale and was tempted at the time...

I did test ride a MASH a few years ago but it wasn't quite what I wanted. I am undecided about wheels for my XBR rebuild as documented (in excruciating detail) elsewhere on these pages. I like the look of spokes but like the tubeless tyres on the Comstars. Some time ago I did convert spoked wheels on my Triumph Tiger 955i to tubeless but don't really fancy repeating the exercise.

Anyway, welcome to yet another XBR owner!

Thanks.
I'd have never gone for a Mash due to the lack of power and lack of confidence in the copied motor. I bought this as the seller gave me a really good trade in for the RE, including picking up and dropping off the bikes.
I'd love to fit a bigger motor in this as I was shocked at how many revs it needs (coming from a Wing remember!) - prices of 650 pots/motors are ridiculous; FireBlade motors are cheaper  ::)
Tubeless tires... I'll probably Dremel any protruding spokes then silicon seal & rim tape the wheels.

You may like to read how I did it on the Tiger:

A nice little read. You went for a very serious spec on the sealant! I'll just use silicon and rim tape then put a few psi in the tires while it sets.

Yes, but I got it cheap (for nowt) as it was nearly out of date and the bloke in the supplier's shop was quite interested in what I was doing.

I only get like that when I read nonsense  ;D
Had a guy on the GoldWing forum stating that wearing a yellow helmet would help stop getting knocked off his bike  :o ::) ;D
He got both barrels  ;D
