Anybody near East Linton?
« on: October 15, 2022, 09:32:22 AM »
I'm looking at a CB400SS on Gumtree there (https://www.gumtree.com/p/honda-motorbikes/honda-cb-400-ss-2006-motorbike-/1442376083). I'll have a chat with the seller but it's a bit far for me to go and view (300+ miles!)

Is there any kind soul in the area who might be able to pop over and have a quick shufti if I decide to go further with it? Petrol / beer / speeding fines reimbursed of course.....

Have you thought about a Royal Enfield Continental GT535 ? there are quite  a few on ebay, one is a 2016 with high bar conversion,   just a thought...

No, had an Enfield (pre-65 trials for several years) and that put me off, allied to potentially dodgy build quality. I also fancied the Mash for some time - and had a test ride a few years ago - which is essentially the CB400SS. But again build quality makes me prefer the original.

It's all Tony's fault - if he hadn't told me about the 400 Honda I'd still be in blissful ignorance.....

Me on the Enfield - some years ago now:

The Conti GT535 is actually not a bad bike at all. It's the UCE EFI engine and the build quality is much improved over the early Indian (and later) models.

Mine was only about £2.5K for a very low mileage model with quite a few extras including a bar conversion-it was recorded as a damaged repairable though but I was amazed how well the whole bike cleaned up to look almost like new.

Handling and fuelling was faultless. The frame was designed by Harris which has now been acquired by RE.

The EFI models and onwards are IMHO much better than the Bullet Electra I bought new off Hitchcocks.

Also Hitchcocks sells loads of specialised parts-so the sky's the limit for mods if you want to go that way.

If memory has failed, as does mine, that must have been the time when you won and I came second. What is it they say 'the older I get the better I was'. I can't recall your prowess, but I know the only second I would have ever achieved was a second-to-last!

Many thanks Brendan, the seller promised me some photos but seems to have disappeared now.....

My brother in law who lives in Melrose has offered to have a look but his experience is with BMs and the like. If the seller resurfaces perhaps I could get back in touch with you?

I didn't know about them either till Tony of this parish mentioned them. If I'd been a bit quicker off the mark one went for £1500 on ebay at the beginning of the month. Most seem around the £2,500+ mark.

That yellow one is pretty but kickstart only - and it's in Norfolk which is a fair trek....

I had thought of an XBR but they're pig-ugly (to my eyes at least) and a bit on the heavy side. There are a couple as you say sub-£2000 at dealers. I'm not in a rush (initial over-enthusiasm subsidiug) so will see what transpires. One thing putting me off the Scottish one is its date which is a year too new to put on my classic bike policy. But that wouldn't stop me buying it if I could ever get to speak to the seller again.
