Hi
I also owned a 2014 model (must be an Ian thing) and was mostly very happy with it. I did find it had enough power to cruise at A road speeds, though lacked in acceleration in getting there. The motor was really torquey for a Japanese single, which I have sometimes found like to be revved more like a twin, and it had very good fuel economy if I remember correctly averaging about 70 to 75mpg. Parts weren't expensive and were freely available so no problem with servicing, The one area I was less happy with was finish. I ride all year round and in any weather and after 12 months and about 12,000 miles there wasn't a bit of aluminium on the bike that didn't look 20 years old.
Obviously with bikes everything comes down to personal preference and personal use, but if I wanted a reliable all-rounder that had adequate power for modern roads, guaranteed reliability and longevity it would be the Honda 500x every time. I regret selling my CBF500 in a moment of madness. However if I loved thumpers and wanted something that would be a great plodder that would still be running in 20 years and was a bit quirky then my money would go to the SR400.
Just one other thought; the SR is kickstart only and with the best will in the world 'old world charm' ran out for me and I couldn't wait to have a button to press again.
