Yamaha SR400 - 2015 model
« on: November 06, 2021, 04:17:37 PM »
There’s a couple of these up for auction.
Does anyone have experience of them that they could share please?
I quite fancy taking one on, though I’m a little underwhelmed by the apparent lack of bhp which is actually less than my 1981 Cb250rs.
Any considered thoughts or experiences gratefully received. Cheers.

Hi Kevberlin, I owned a 2014 model which is the same as you are considering. I only found out about a couple of tricks that will make them easier to live with after I had sold it. The original carb version (all jap grey imports) weren't restricted by the emissions loaded on them by EU and others. The fuel injected UK models had a throttle stop that you can easily remove that will give you a little more bhp (1 or 2!🙄). I believe that the UK 400s were about 24 bhp which is more than the Benelli Imperiale and the Royal Enfield Meteor 350. The front suspension would benefit from a spacer or two on top of the springs. Nothing major but it does improve the bouncy front end.
I found it to be a lovely soft thumper that will plod along all day. If you want more power then buy a bigger bike!
Hth Ian 👍

Ian, Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts. I’m not looking for performance because, as you rightly point out, then I should look for a bigger bike. I’m caught between the Yamaha as a left field option, or another G310GS, or another Cb500x.
Confused? I am!!!

Hi

I also owned a 2014 model (must be an Ian thing) and was mostly very happy with it. I did find it had enough power to cruise at A road speeds, though lacked in acceleration in getting there. The motor was really torquey for a Japanese single, which I have sometimes found like to be revved more like a twin, and it had very good fuel economy if I remember correctly averaging about 70 to 75mpg. Parts weren't expensive and were freely available so no problem with servicing, The one area I was less happy with was finish. I ride all year round and in any weather and after 12 months and about 12,000 miles there wasn't a bit of aluminium on the bike that didn't look 20 years old.

Obviously with bikes everything comes down to personal preference and personal use, but if I wanted a reliable all-rounder that had adequate power for modern roads, guaranteed reliability and longevity it would be the Honda 500x every time. I regret selling my CBF500 in a moment of madness. However if I loved thumpers and wanted something that would be a great plodder that would still be running in 20 years and was a bit quirky then my money would go to the SR400.

Just one other thought; the SR is kickstart only and with the best will in the world 'old world charm' ran out for me and I couldn't wait to have a button to press again.

Thanks for your considered thoughts.
In view of the feedback and how I was feeling about the bike, I have decided to pull the plug on the sr400,
I’m going to hold position for the moment and see what may come up on offer as we enter into 2022.
Thanks again,
Kev

No! I've blown up the thread by posting a reply in Greek to Spartacus and the coding for the Greek alphabet has created what you see, not what I posted! ::)

My apologies for the co.ck up! [I'll get it yet! ;)]

Just back from 5 days chilling in the Inner Hebrides, so anything may happen! ;D

Good health, Bill

That's all Greek to me.
