Mini thumpers on tour
« on: October 04, 2021, 07:15:44 PM »
Took the little bikes with us on our jaunt up north last week, did most of the nc500 over the week whilst out and about in the far north, anyhow, one day we decided it might be fun to ride from durness to John o groats, a 100 mile trip, and another 100 back, this is on largely single track unclassified and b roads with a few a road miles from thurso. I've got to say, the roads up there are not really suitable for anything much bigger than a 125, but it's great fun joining round the countryside on a couple of commuter bikes whilst every Ody else was either in a motorhome or a 1000cc plus adventure bike!

That looks like great fun. As you say those bikes are probably more fun on those roads as they can be used pretty much to their maximum rather than being held back by 90% to avoid running off the road.

ive a foot in both camps here, as i also run a gs bmw, if i had to do this again, id still take the honda. sue the bmw would have been a lot quicker, but the roads in the far north west of scotland, from jog to ullapool arent really capable of sustaining more than 50-60 mph on and even then, 60 is riding on the ragged edge of safety, theyre so uneven bumpy and poorly surfaced, and so narrow that theyre are passing bays every 50 yards or so that you still need to use if youre on a bike, theres not enough tarmac to pass a car on a bike in many places. so the bmw would be a frustrating mix of bouncy suspension and manic acceleration, not really fun at all. the little honda was perfectly suited to 75% of the conditions up there so you can do 200 miles in a day and not step off feeling like youve been wrestling a bear. i can highly reccomend doing the trip though, i reccon for comfort and to be able to see as much as possible with all the small villages and viewing places, 100 miles a day is the limit to make it memorable rather than just riding for hours! great fun, plans are afoot now for a trip that we will make to wales, across to dublin, through ireland and the republic and across to stranraer then round the full nc500, just need to speak to swmbo to see if shes up for it.
