Stafford Show Report
« on: October 21, 2019, 08:36:53 PM »
ok, ive been home for 24 hours now so im going to put a few words down about this years event. it has to be said that right upto friday we didnt know whether we would have enough bikes for the stand, but gareth bought his own enfield, ians bmw, and bill bought his srx and divine ducati single as well as my beesas and even a small italian moped got in on the act. but even though they all got set up in time, i just scraped through at the last minute and we literally rode the bikes up the ramp to the sound of the shutter closing.
friday night we all spent in the onsite pub serving a selection of synthetic tasting beers in plastic glasses in that modern way that large events have managed to perfect the art of removing absolutely every vestage of pleasure or satisfaction from having a drink with your mates, honestly, thy might just as well have lined us all up and instructed us on when to drink and when to put the glass down with a loudhailer as a drum was beaten. anyhow, they had food of a quality to match any soup kitchen or military encampment under fire, served with all the joy you might imagine from such a place.
saturday dawned wet and slightly blowy but that didnt put the punters off, and it gave us all the chance to take a bit of time to wander round the show and the autojumble. some of the prices were in a comedic class of their own, and this was only reinforced by the appearance of henry cole and his cohorts trailing a film crew behind them, lots of the bikes in the buildings were polished and pampered to within an inch of what could be seen as decent, a fetisistic level of constant rubbing with various fluids and potions that seemed to have infected gareth as he treated the enfield to several rub downs with something he furtively kept hidden in a bag under the table, but there were plenty of nice examples of both brit and japanese classics as well as european exotics. (gilera mopeds aside)
it was noticeably quieter in the autojumble outside with fewer traders there and there were also a few european traders with large stocks of eu registered bikes for sale which im guessing is due to the weak pound. they had some nics stuff and were all advertizing that they had th nova documentation for sellers to register bikes in the uk.
saturday night we decamped into stafford and had a good meal and a few pints in the town centre, stafford is a lovely little town and well worth a visit for a night out, we got a taxi back only to discover that we were locked out, the gates were shut and the staff had scarpered, so we all climbed over th gates, not easy in the dark, 8 foot high with spikes on top and us all somewhat less than sober, but nobody got skewered so that was all ok.
sunday was much the same as saturday with the weather being dry and clear thus attracting more punters, though the car parks were a muddy mess and the site had engaged a jcb 4x4 tractor to drag out vehicles even on the saturday afternoon, so what the public car parking was like by sunday is anyones guess.
people started packing away earlier than in past years and by 5pm we were ready for the off. if any of you havent done stafford before, i can only say that you should give it a go. if we get a stand for the april show, then we will need some different bikes to display, so, stick the date in your diary and come to have a good weekend with us all, you wont regret it, and as we noted, in april, the rain is warmer......

I originally posted this under the 'Events', but having seen John's impressions here, thought that I should join him, so here goes.

Evening and my thanks to all Thumpeteers at Stafford. Good craic, with others whom I had not met before and the assistance to get the bikes up the ramp for the stand and then back down and loaded into the back of the van. Gareth's catering was grand as were Ian's jelly babies. "Off with his head!"  Bit cool dossing in the van and the paddy fields for parking and camping appeared to cause mayhem, with an all-terrain fork lift hauling the victims to safety. Our pitch on the hard yard was nonetheless full of water filled potholes and covered in a light slurry layer. The 400m canter to the khazi at 05:00am was bracing! The Saturday night in Stafford was entertaining, good grub (Weatherspoons), good beer (The Sun), good chips (the wee place on the main street ?), some local wildlife (re: the Dubliner's 'Up in the zoological gardens'!) and the final assault over the locked gates to get back into the showground having been locked out by the zealous 'security' staff employed by Stafford Council. The scrolls in the centre of the gates being kinder to straddle than the spikes either side!   :o ::)   Brought back memories of sneeking back into my dorm after being out illicitly and after midnight.  ;)

Some good buys to be had, but an awfull lot of tat and scrap, whilst the boys from Herefordshire had some very interesting prices on what could have been nice machinery, if the hadn't left it out to achieve a weathered patina (white alloy and red mild steel). The 3 'hoods' stood around, with jock itch, was enough to put any potential punter off from buying. Bonhams at £30 for a catalogue to peruse the lots made your eyes water, but some of the prices achieved didn't seem excessive when compared with the pitches outside. John and I drove shotgun up the M6 through the Stafford 'go slow' area of 15 + miles afore choosing different warp factors for the onward journeys up north. Fastest M21 on the road!  ;)  Stopped raining after leaving Stafford by ~20 miles, which was very welcome. Stopped off at 'The Little Chip Shop' in Penrith market square for a nice bit of fish and mushy pea fritter; very tasty and crisp, washed down with a cup of tea. Then came all the way home to pull into the yard at 00:15hrs Monday morning. The travel being about 6 hours for the 320 miles. It was 2 degrees C at the house, and I was pleased to crash in my own pit, rather than the floor of the van.

Good health to you all and thank you.

Bill

Well... all I can say after reading  both reviews is....... I'm now even more GUTTED that I couldn't get down, climbing over the gates to get back in, sleeping in the back of my freezing cold van. Running to the freezing cold bogs at ridiculous o'clock. Bye eck it'd really take me back to my yoof. As I've said before I was gutted I couldn't make down and fingers crossed for April. Hopefully count me in for a round of that there plastic beer 🍺😉... cheers, Michael

Many thanks to John and Bill for their detailed reviews of the weekend. I always enjoy them but I'm fortunate in that I can come and go rather more easily than many, apart from on the Saturday evening when I got stuck in the quagmire of a carpark! Looking forward to April if we get a stand though dunno if I will have a different bike to show.
I will have to start one soon ....maybe....

No pressure Ian.  :-X

The Duke was out for the first canter this afternoon and achieved 20 miles, with no major teething problems. However, there is a very LOUD bellowing growl note from the pipe and the revs definitely have to be 'knocked off' in built up areas.   ;)  The carb needs a tweek and all nuts and bolts will need a check, once cold. Hopefully, the weather may settle down again for the weekend and there will be another opportunity for another canter.  ;D

As for John's description of The Duke being "divine", I didn't realise he was that smitten.  :o  That's why it's part of the family!  ;D

Enjoy your wheels and good health, Bill
