Iodine tip
« on: July 29, 2019, 01:18:54 PM »
Well, it's now 11 days since my prostate op, and thanks to the wonderful NHS, I'm up and about again and doing really well. I got the train into Birmingham this morning, walked up to work to hand in my sick notes, and called into WH Smith on the way home to stock up on magazines for my convalescence. Anyway, one of the mags I bought was an aero modelling one (yes, I know, we never do grow up, do we!) and one of the first things I read Is a tip I'd never heard of before.

Apparently, if you dip steel screw threads into Iodine solution before screwing into aluminium, it stops them seizing. That's a new one on me, can anybody confirm this!

And in case anyone is wondering, I walked 4.3 miles this morning and I'm now completely done in.  :(

Congratulations! Very pleased to read that you are on the road to recovery and hope that it continues.

As for the iodine! Bearing in mind that I failed 'O' level chemistry 3 times  :o  all I remember is that iodine is an oxidising agent. So, maybe when the steel screw is dipped in the iodine it forms a thin layer of iron oxide that forms a barrier between the iron and the aluminium?

I suspect that it is all about where the elements are placed within the Periodic Table in relation to each other, at which point I start to have an allergic reaction myself!  :(

I would just stick to a small artist's paint brush to apply Cu grease to the threads of the screw afore threading into place. I suppose Kur-Rust might have a similar effect as the iodine, but then I am probably ruminating, rather than making sense!  :-X

All the best, Bill

Excellent. Thanks Steve. I should be back on the bike by mid September, so maybe catch up with you later in the year...

I always thought you had to dip your penis in iodine to prevent it getting infected by ladies of ill repute.  Though it could have been potassium permanganate.

Good to hear you're on the mend.

Glad you're doing well Pete, keep up the good work with the walking.

I think the trick with the penis is not to dip it into the ladies of ill repute in the first place.

Thanks guys. Sadly, one of the side effects of the surgery is that I won't be dipping my wick in anything for several months!   :'( :o :)

Absolutely we did. I keep a map of where all of your wicks are at any one time. Don't we all?
