Bugger, I always get it wrong. No wonder I was thrown out of my conversational French night class they couldn't hear me over the mighty Enfield's exhaust.

I've been busy buying a moto guzzi v7 off Martin (xbally) , finally got round to taxing and insuring it today, off out tomorrow for my first spin. .... don't worry, don't worry I've not deserted the fold, still got the ktm (for now at least) and still got the XBR tracker project on the bench 🔧🛠⚙️

Notching up the miles on the Enfield. 2500 so far.

Really enjoying the bike. We all know they're not fast, but if you're in the Enfield frame of mind, very enjoyable.

Couple of issues to date. A plastic ferrule on the injector body which connects to a tube from the evap canister fell off due to being badly glued. Dispensed with it and attached the hose firmly with a stainless hose clamp. Easy solved.

It has become apparent that the chain, which is an o ring type, is wearing uneven due to lack of grease in the bushes. This problem was pointed out by someone on the royal enfield owners uk Facebook site. Needs replacing with a reputable brand.

I notice Bill has been keeping the flag flying - how are you Bill? Well I hope. Hope you got the choke lever sorted.

Cheers all.

Glad you're enjoying the beige beastie. It seems the OEM chains on Enfields are crap anyway, my original one was as loose as knicker elastic in 6000 miles and was replaced with a Renolds one from Hitchcocks. That only lasted 7000 miles so I bought an Elite one from Hitchcocks.

It was in fitting this one that I realised the snail cam adjusters are miles out and the chains were running out of line when I set them both equally! Hopefully this chain will last a little longer now that the wheel is properly aligned. Shouldn't be a problem for you cos you've got the new adjusters.

Yes I was on the mighty Enfield and it performed faultlessly. I went south-west this time to Haverigg and then explored Coniston, Millom, Wasdale Head etc. Stunning part of the Lakes I've not previously been to but I will be back as they say. Covered about 1000 miles in the 4 days I was away.

Ian, sounds like a great trip. It's a beautiful part of England for sure.

Regarding wheel alignment, I ignore the marks on the adjusters and use a long ally rectangular hollow section to align the wheels. Can be a pain but well worth the effort. Besides, a decent quality o ring/x ring chain doesn't need adjusting that often. Same for a standard chain if it's kept constantly lubricated, especially into the bushes. The OE chain fitted to the latest models is an o ring type but it appears not to contain much grease!! A guy on the RE owners site had issues and upon splitting the links found the pin/bush area behind the o rings devoid of grease. The o rings had successfully kept water out (proving their worth) but the metal surfaces were totally dry and hence the joints stiff. Looking closely at mine from the outside, some links are keeping a set angle so they're obviously dry inside. Wear is happening unevenly causing pronounced slack/tight spots. It needs swapping. I'm keeping the outside of the rollers well clean and lub'd to avoid sprocket wear. I've caught it early thankfully.

A reputable brand x ring chain can be bought for around 50 quid so ill be replacing it next month.

My Enfield OE chain snapped. Bin the POS before it kills you.

https://sites.google.com/site/hrpvindaloomotorcycles/home/news-and-announcements/chain-failure

The Reynolds is rubbish, typical non-O-ring old school thing that needs boiling in whale blubber every fortnight, but they stretch rather than snap.

A DID unfortunately won't fit, the Indian garbage is a funny size and the oil bath outboard of the chain is a restriction on width.

The set up on the new bikes is different, the rear end anyhow, as it has disc brakes. The way the sprocket attaches is more like a jap bike. I've tracked the chain size to a 530 using the hitchcocqe part no. I'll get the vernier on the job, although two guys on the RE O uk site have verified personal use of 530 DID.
