SilverStar back on the road
« on: August 15, 2017, 10:59:56 AM »
I've just realised why the F650 is playing up at the moment. It's jealous 'cos I've finally got the SilverStar back on the road!

Gorgeous mate! I've done 5000k on mine since my purchase in the spring. Though I'm probably going to sell it soon. What are they worth?

Difficult bike to price really 'cos of the rarity. I don't reckon anything less than £1800 for a roadworthy example, topping out at about 2.5k for a low mileage minter, if there are any. If it had 'Matchless' on the tank instead of MZ you could add another 1k to that...

What's the story with these?Don't recall ever seeing one before!I no longer read the number of bike mags i used to but i haven't seen anything about them even in classic / retro mags. Are there many about? Were they ever officially imported?Looks to be a really classic type of thumper!

The story is that when the wall came down in the early 90's MZ started to really struggle when the government backing was withdrawn. They sought financing in the private sector, but one of the conditions of the deal was that they move away from two strokes to four strokes. The design team allegedly then came up with the 500R, Saxon Country, and SilverStar all within the space of 6 weeks! Once the financial backing was in place they went on to design the Skorp, Mastiff and Baghira using the Yam 660 motor, so the previous range were dropped as soon as this happened.

The 500R was a simple drop of the Rotax 500 engine into a modified ETZ251 frame, with identical bodywork. The other two also used the modified ETZ251 frame. The Saxon Country was what we would now call an adventure bike I suppose, with a large tank, attractive cobby styling and off road pretensions and the SilverStar was designed to appeal to the traditional UK/European sporting thumper market.

The 500R was not that uncommon, with probably several hundred in the UK, but the SilverStar and Saxon Country only reached figures of about 30 each in the UK. For uber street cred, try and find the even rarer GreenStar or RedStar, only one of each reached this country AFAIK!

Oh,right,thanks.....I thought some of the cycle parts looked familiar as i used to run a low mileage second hand ETZ250 in the early to mid 90's. I remember picking the bike up from Tenbury wells in Worcestershire (about 30 miles from where i live),the wife drove the car (Fiesta XR2) back and followed me on the bike-by then it was dark.We had to give our son(then a baby obviously) (now 27) his last bottle of milk on the back seat (of the car not the bike!) before we left to get him back in bed for his nightly sleep!I prefer the road based styling of this bike - i have never really taken to the off road look as i'm mainly a road rider .Great bike-i want one!Unfortunately it's unlikely to happen as we are down sizing to a bungalow and ill planning a lean to shed/ workshop tacked on to the single garage (which will house my sports car) so i'm down to 2-3 bikes.(Don't worry Michael i hope to keep your old XBR as do it up in the years to come!).My CBR600 is on Ebay but it's slow going.Just over half the reserve price-halfway through the auction. Started at 99p and up to £880.Something like around 100 watchers and over 3000 views-16 bids todate. In the early Ebay days if you got 4 watchers at least one would usually bid. Now you get loads of watchers but are lucky to get even one bid.Sorry to go off topic!

Most of the watchers are probably people with similar bikes wondering how much it will go for. I have to confess to doing this myself.
