Dumb question.
« on: May 09, 2017, 10:36:58 PM »
Is a two stroke single classed as a thumper, or is it just four stroke singles? And is it just larger capacity bikes, or is, for example, a CG125 still a thumper? Just interested in peoples views  :-\

I would say 2t`s aren`t thumpers no matter capacity, and a real thumper should be at least 350cc, so that rules out my gn`s.. :(

Yea, I know what ya mean. I'm in total agreement on the first, and not sure about the second. But, I am prejudiced, as I know the club was originally formed on the basis of XBRs and SRXs  :-\

No you can't really have a 2 stroke * thumper, in fact if you want to get technical I believe that a 'Thumper' not only has to be over 350cc but also a long stroke engine so technically that rules out XBR's, SRX's and most other modern  singles  :-\.  Good job this club isn't too fussed about 'technically'!!  ;)

I always thought that 'Thumpettes' was a good title for sub 350 4 stroke singles.....some very good sub 350 singles out there.

* however you can get 2 stroke diesel engines... i bet they 'thump' quite well!

This is a Field Marshall Tractor....it's a single cylinder 2 stroke diesel.....it has an 8" bore and 10" stroke!....8 litres!!!....and I think we can agree it thumps!!

Yes, I don't think any two stroke could qualify as a thumper. Quite happy to include the 'thumpettes' though - CG's are sweet little bikes and I've always fancied a GN, though never quite managed to get one!

Personally I never thought of any of my CZs or MZs as thumpers, in fact I'm not sure I thought of my Tiger Cub or C15 as thumpers either. I know the term originally meant long-stroke 4t singles but as both Matchless and Norton made short-stroke comp machines others should qualify surely.

I sometimes think my BMW F650 cheats by being water cooled but as it makes a lovely thumping sound and vibrates a lot I accept it as a thumper.

If you ask Allen Millyard nicely, I'm sure he could build a bike round that engine. That would be a REAL thumper.  :o

Afternoon  chaps, having now put 650miles on my ktm390 there is no way it can technically be called a thumper, you have to ride it/ rev it like a twin for it to preform. Which it does extremely well for a 390 single. One can't even begin to compare it to an xbr, let alone an original Brit thumper. It is defo NOT a thumper. However i too am of the same opinion as Tim tho, it doesn't really matter wot machine you ride, especially if it's a single cylinder regardless of CC's you'll be welcome on this site.  (*disclaimer* That last bit is just my opinion, and in no way reflects the opinion of the thumper club bosses👍🏍) I do quite like the term "trumpette" for 125's etc tho 😉🤘.
Cheers Michael

You've posted my thoughts exactly Michael. For the purposes of this forum, or meet ups, I would include all singles or people who just have an interest in thumpers, or have owned, or may own one in the future. That just about covers everyone, I think. Let's be inclusive, not exclusive  :)
