CBF250 or YBR250
« on: February 15, 2017, 12:30:11 PM »
As you may remember, I was forced into an emergency braking situation last summer when some stupid idiot did a 'u' turn about 40 feet in front of me. The bike was written off and I received a shoulder injury (AC joint separation).

My solicitor has finally received the police incident log, which clearly confirms my version of events (ie I was not speeding and it was the car drivers fault) so it looks like I might be getting some compensation at last. Inevitably, that will mean a new bike!

The old ETZ251 is an OK commuter, but it is a bit thirsty, and quite 'hands on' in terms of maintenance. It's never let me down of course, after all it is an MZ(!), but I do seem to spend a lot of time tinkering in the garage to keep it running nicely. It's done about 60k miles and it's 25 years old, so I guess that's not unreasonable.

The question is, what do I replace it with as my daily rider? I commute to work, about once a week make a longer cross country trip straight after work, and expect to use it for rides out and camping trips etc. when the weather is a bit iffy and I don't want to get the Silver star dirty.

CBF250's and YBR250's both seem to fit the bill (light weight, flickable in traffic, fantastic tank range, good fuel economy), and fit into the 2k budget I'm prepared to spend.

I've read some pretty uncomplimentary stuff about the YBR as regards reliability, and it has EFI which I'm not keen on, but it does have screw and locknut tappets, which I like. Also, you can't fit a centre stand.

The CBF seems to have better reports as regards reliability and it does have a carby, optional centre stand, but bucket and shim tappet adjustment which I'm not mad on.

What does the panel think?

For a day to day /everyday bike how about a GN250 or a TU250, both very affordable and do loads of mpg , lots of them about, or have a look at sevenseas website for some of the jap imports, FT225 etc,     or try and find a Beta Euro 350 ( dr suz engine)

Well done on the well deserved win! Hopefully the compensation will be equally just. Sorry, don't have experience of either bike.

Ignore this. Made a list then saw you didn't like FI  :-[

Good to hear the claim got sorted though.

Enfield? No electronic ignition either!

Yes, I had thought Enfield Andy, but would an original four speed 350 or 500 be up to daily use?

I ran a 4 speed 350 for 3 years in that role and probably did as much tinkering as you do with the MZ. From experience I would say anything made by Honda beats anything made by Yamaha for reliability and durability.

I was joking.

Might do the job, (my 5 speed 500 did), but lots more garage time than something Japanese.

Spotted this owners review of the CBF250. Some of the other bike reviews are quite interesting too. Was the Yamaha YBR250 officially imported to the UK or are they all imports?

Interesting read. I have to say that if I was in the position of choosing I'd go with the Honda purely because Honda's generally are well built and pretty reliable and the CBF is, I suppose, the grandson of the CB250RS which was a damn good bike.

The paint on my NC750S swing arm is ****. Touch up paint has been in use since it was 6 months old. Honda say they all do that Sir and suggest I have it washed at the main dealer as it must be my use of water that is outside their spec. This is a Japanese factory bike too, not China.

They are also having a spate of DCT failures because a bolt comes undone. Similar response. Fortunately mine is manual.

IMHO Brands are pretty meaningless today.

That said, I wish Nissan would make bikes. Bought the wife a Micra in January. Every detail seems to have been thought out and they just seem so eager to find even the smallest imperfection.
