Speeding!!!!
« on: January 29, 2017, 04:33:06 PM »
Afternoon chaps, just wondered if you'd heard of the new speeding fines that are due to be introduced in the very near future??....apparently it's going to be two times ones weekly earnings plus any points that are due to you. At the moment it's one and a half times your weekly earnings. Just thought it might be a good topic for discussion?... just wondered what you folk out there in thumper land thought of it all. Personally I can't see it making much if any difference at all....cheers, Michael

It'll make a difference if one falls foul of it!  Whether it'll keep speed down generally?

In Finland the fine is a fixed percentage of your salary.....the boss of Nokia got caught a few years ago and the fine was about £200,000 or so!!

I think it's a good idea...they should make it treble if you are caught in built up areas! I'm sick to death of the brainless morons who come past my house (30mph area) at 60-70+ >:(

Absolutely, I've no problem with someone giving it a bit on a nice straight bit of road you know where you're not going to hurt anyone, but through built up areas, villages etc just gets peoples backs up.

You should be allowed to deploy a community stinger. That'll slow the idiots down.

I wonder if the fine will be adjusted for the amount in excess of the limit?  70 in a 30 being much worse than 70 in a 60.

Note to Self: Shiney side goes UP.

I think the increases are for 30+ over the limit only. Good for Steve's offenders, but question is, can a member of the public request a mobile speed unit be set up where there are dangerous speeders?

Aye Michael,

This should be in 'Rants'.  I have tried to remain cool, calm and collected, BUT! >:(

After a motorcyclist came off outside the house this afternoon at less than 40mph due to the slimy road conditions, the two Traffic boys asked if they could 'set up' in our drive, as they had been appalled by the driving. One copper was nearly run-down by a 'flat cap' as he was directing the traffic past the breakdown truck, picking the bike up.  :o

We live on one of those "open road" A trunk roads and you can see for getting on for half a mile along the straight. But, half way along is a turning for a "cut-through", "rat-run" and after that the road is convex, vanishing into a concavity that includes a 25° right-hander and the entrance into a gravel quarry on the inside of the corner. Traffic includes everything from tractors, with large trailers or mounted implements, Ural sidecars laden with firewood at 35mph max., the full gamit of HGV's including timber lorries, fish lorries, grain lorries, horse boxes from the local eventing centre and white van man to Subaru's, Porsche, Ferrari being given "tests" at a ton plus. Add into this mix the scooter and 125 riders commuting into work at Tesco on shift rotas, up to the "Rocket jockey" packs and Hardley 'ride-outs'  8)  ::) ; out for their Sunday jaunt to the 'Green Willie' at Tyndrum at well over the ton or 40mph. And don't forget the service bus, running every hour and stopping outside peoples houses beside the road.

A tractor broken in half by the force of the impact, XT600 forks sheared clean off below the bottom yoke etc, all caused by impatience, speed or an inability to read road signs. A 54 seater bus ended up in my driveway thinking that he was making a right-hand turn into the "rat-run"!  :o

After this afternoon's incident we totted up 30 incidents in the 31 years we have lived here, including one motorcyclist fatality, 3 serious where there was critical injury, including one motorcyclist and almost all involving injury requiring hospital admission.

Two weeks wages seems cheap, when compared with the ego and arrogance. Double the points penalty and maybe tweak the insurance group of vehicle you are permitted to drive. Car Group 2 for a year!  :-\  Motorcycle Group A2 for a year!  :-\

Just go canny and make sure it isn't you that gets caught or sprawled up the road.

As for the 60mph - 70mph in a 30mph or 40mph area, nothing less than a 6 month ban and crushing fits the bill! Wage, rank, or 'Tweetter' rating doesn't count! Harrumph!  >:(

Just watch out if you drive past my drive entrance!

Keep safe, Bill

Agree entirely with you Bill, it seems that many of the 'new generation' seem entirely ignorant of the skill of roadcraft.  Here in Lincolnshire we have a particular problem with tractors coming out of fields they are working. Every year we have a number of really nasty accidents, mostly bikes but some cars, where riders is going down a nice straight when a tractor with attached implement comes out of the field or around a bend and finds a tractor on the blind side of the corner. Thing is, 9 times out of 10 the signs are there if you know how to read them, usually mud or soil across the road or near the field entrance. On the road, if you know how to read it, the white lines tell you of junctions, bends or dips before you get there but many just don't seem to be able to read the signs.

I was taught road craft when I did my Gold Star course many years ago and it has been invaluable. If you get a chance to read the Official Police motorcyclist road craft manual I can highly recommend it.

I was out in the van yesterday - nasty day nasty roads- going down the local single carriageway bypass, approaching the roundabout , check the mirrors and find an SV650 has appeared just behind me past the other traffic.  I indicate right, take the roundabout in the correct position, matey on the bike comes past my outside going straight on, misses the offside of the van by inches!!! WTF!

.......sorry, I'm ranting....

I personally like the idea of people being fined a percentage of their earnings. As usual, the Scandinavians have come up with a fair and sensible answer to a problem.

What Steve said above. You get fined a fixed percentage of your earnings, so the wealthier you are, the more you pay  ;)
