Progress report on getting "Pride & Joy" back into shape
« on: November 12, 2015, 05:16:19 PM »
I did say, ( if anybody was interested ), that I would post details of damage repairs to my little CL400.... The scratched tank, badly scratched headlamp back, and the damaged speedo ( dented chrome bezel ), were shown to the best painter I have ever come across. One Mark Lovell, of custompaintairbrushing.co.uk   residing in Darwen in Lancashire. His services are used by, amongst others, a local Triumph dealership, and by what may be the largest Gold Wing outlet in the UK. Check out his work on his site. He managed to put a layer of black "crinkle-effect" paint on the bezel surrounding the speedo, thus saving me from seeing the result of mindless vandalism every time I put the ignition key in. After getting it back together, I had a quick ride, and found the back brake was fairly "leaden" and not as I remembered........ Yep, the toe-rags had "cooked" it. Finding a new pair of shoes proved fruitless at a local Honda dealer. ( But they redeemed themselves later on in this tale ). David Silver Spares came up with the part number for the rear shoes..... but did not have any..... This had me pondering the possibility of having new linings bonded to the old shoes, then having them machined to the same size as the drum.... I need not have worried...! David Silver Spares telephoned me within 24 hours, telling me that one of their suppliers had cross-referenced that particular part number, and found a compatible pair that David Silver had in stock..!! And it would cost me.... wait for it............... £16-50...!!!! ( this included vat and delivery ). So .... after all of this work, I thought I may as well have the front brake as good as new as well. So, the front disc was entrusted to a local grinding firm. I then returned to the aforementioned Honda dealer. Having used them very many times previously, they told me to bring the original front pads in. whereupon they invited me into their stores, and we soon found the pads for my 17 year old bike were the same as those fitted to 250 and 300 singles. Result.!! ( I did say they redeemed themselves ) . So, she is all back together, and looking as good as she did before the scumbags got hold of her. I will attempt to get some pictures up, showing the progress. Regards, Tony

Looks as good as new and gave you something to do! :o

Have you revised your security though?

I am personally having a rethink as chains are only a deterrant and will crack easily with bolt croppers. Wire cable seems to be the best as it's not brittle and you can get it in quite big diameters which makes it difficult to get into bolt croppers.

Fancy a pootle down to Llanthony (South Wales) later this month to show it off?
If I'm not working I'll be away on my bike camping!

Thanks all for the positive comments. I have certainly upgraded all of my security measures...... and I wholeheartedly agree with you Steve, a big thick multi-stranded, ( and sheathed ) wire cable, will be quite a problem for a bolt-cutter.  Regards Llanthony,  never been.  Are all of you rough-tough-hardy souls actually CAMPING during the remnants of Hurricane Abigail...? Or is there a "bunk-house" available..?  Or even a bed and breakfast establishment nearby...? Do let me know please.... I am not promising, but if it isn't lashing it down, I may be tempted.   Regards, Tony

Thanks for the info Steve. I think I will give them a call and book myself a bunk-house. I will message you to confirm, and we can certainly meet up for the ride down. Looking forward to it.  Regards, Tony.  PS.... if I am navigating, I am NOT using the one  have just bought from a speedway rider..... it just says, "After 100 yards turn left".... "After 100 yards turn left".....  "After 100 yards turn......!!!!
