I've been putting this job off for ages, as I wasn't sure what way to go about it. I've quite a few scabby bodywork parts with lugs missing etc

So I looked online, and had a go at the soldering iron method. Somewhere along the line I've inherited a big old cricket bat soldering iron which I thought I'd never have a use for. It worked pretty good, you melt the plastic a bit and then feed in a cable tie almost like a wedding rod. Very smelly!
I also cut some staples from copper wire and melted them into the plastic very successfully.
I then remembered seeing a fella fill in gauges in the base of a snowboard. Cut up a plastic milk carton into strips, then light the end like a taper, and drip feed them on like a melting candle. This worked a treat

Using this method I was able to fabricate new lugs and weld them onto grotty side panels. If I can do it anyone can, its dead easy.
Just don't set your trousers on fire like I did, as molten plastic dripped onto oil impregnated fabric
So if anyone out there has any old knackered xbr plastics, please pm me
