Any advice on registering an unregistered vehicle

Hi All,

I wondered if anybody had any experience registering an unregistered motorcycle ?

The bike is in the UK, 1989 and has no V5 or registration plates.

I am waiting for a VIN check to come back to make sure it isn't stolen.

I have no idea which market the original bike was sold into but I know it wasn't officially imported to the UK by Suzuki ( checked with them ).

I'm hoping if all checks out that it is a simple job of applying via a specific form to the DVLA, MOT using VIN, insure on VIN, pay for tax and maybe a VAT charge as there are no importation documents.

Just thought I would post on the off chance anybody had done something similar before?

Well, on my grey import SRX, I had to get a document from Yamaha proving the bikes year of manufacture... I had to give them chassis number... Yamaha then charged me £60 for a 3 line letter detailing year of manufacture...
Then you get into a chicken/egg situation... you will have to attend a DVLA office with the letter, various documents filled out, and an MOT... the MOT is the problem.... and this bit may have changed now.... but I had to go to a friendly bike MOT garage to get an MOT against the chassis number... THEN... you need insurance.... this too is done against the chassis number ('cos you aint got a number plate yet) and the insurance company (well, mine anyway...) are reluctant to insure against the chassis number.... they graciously covered me for a week!.... luckily by the end of the week I had a number which I forwarded to the insurers....
It's a V62 you need to complete, and it can be done by post, but if you make a cock up, then you'll have stuff going backwards and forwards for bluddy weeks, so best if you can get to a local DVLA office

No such thing as a local DVLA office any more, they have all been shut thanks to the government opposing a public poll they instigated.
MOT and insurance against the chassis number usually isn't a problem but is only for a limited time, proof of age can be had from an owners club or an age relating expert(I have an address somewhere if you want it)
The DVLA website has the forms of which some are downloadable and also the forms to aid completing them.

Once my friend in the trade has finally got me the VIN check, I couldn't find an onle source as they always needed the reg number, I will crack on with the process.

Sounds reasonable enough, just may need to spend a little time on the phone to the DVLA.

I seem to remember something about needing to prove import duty had been paid, I'm not sure if this still applies.

Yeah, thats correct it's a new thing the dvla need as part of the registration process it's called NOVA (notification of vehicle arrivals??), when I registered a bike a few months ago I had to contact HMRC and complete a form for a letter from them to say they had no interest in the bike and no duty was due.

I will try that route ,I thought maybe I would have to pay 20% VAT to HRMC to gain proof of import as I have no other documents.

VIN checks carried out by my local friendly garage ( good guy ) and all proved good.

I have booked in for an MOT on the VIN so the process is now underway.

Hi, I'm going through the process at present, apply for your V55/5 now and you may get it in a couple of weeks if you're lucky.
If the bike is over 49cc you have to apply to HMRC to get a tax clearance letter to add to your V55/5 application.
A dating letter will be required...I went to an owners club approved by the DVLA.
MOT and Insurance on the frame number.
I also included a photo of the bike.
With the V55/5 you get the V355/5 which is the guide to filling in the V55/5.
I sent my application off on Friday, so I should know the outcome in a couple of weeks.....when we had the LVLO it could be done the same day and now it's a long drawn out affair.

I applied for mine 2 weeks ago so i wont hold my breath. Hopefully it wont take quite so long. Yep im an eternal optimist.
