Am I imagining it?
« on: April 28, 2013, 03:46:07 AM »
When I go for a ride on my Kawasaki ER5 and nod to other motorcyclists I get about an 8 out of 10 response. However when I nod to them on my newly acquired GN 400, which looks like a modern 125 from the front I'm getting about a 4 out of 10 response. Are motorcyclists really that snobbish about bike size? Anyone else find this or as the title says am I imagining it?

Conversly when I go to the local big shiny bike shop for a bacon buttie in their cafe no-one looks at the Kwak but yesterday when I took the GN 6 or 7 blokes had a good look round it. What a strange bunch we are.

To be sure, I think you're right and bike snobbery is alive and well thank [insert deity of choice here]! I, for one, want nothing to do with the power ranger section of motorcycling and don't want to be associated with the 'mid life crisis' brigade on their HD's complete with matching leather waistcoats either. Nope, no 'Brotherhood' for me thanks. Now don't think me rude or ignorant... See a bike, any bike, on the side of the road and I'll check to make sure they're ok. Give me a friendly wave and of course, I'll give you a friendly wave back. But that's as far as it goes for me... unless we're in the middle of winter, the rain/snow is p1ssing down, it's freezing, blowing a gale and we pass each other on our way to work. Respect is now due and you can have a nod of appreciation. ;)

Modern BMW riders seem to be the worst for it, though Harleys are up there with them.

MZs don't get much of a response these days - probably too busy trying to figure out what it is.

It is not imagination, you've only to enter the strange world of the single model web board to see their imagined places in the hierachy. The Yanks are even more hilarious, Ultra-fat-wide-boy-glides don't wave at Drain-unblocker Badboys never mind the poor bloke who bought Japanese if the web pages are to be believed (OK it was ADVrider, so all *******s).

The joys of "the season" are indeed well amongst us here abouts. Power Rangers out making their attempts at organ donation, parades of badboy accountants doing 35 mph with a queue if irate pensioners trying to get home from the garden centre behind them, little groups of Charlies with their Touratech boxes empty except for Starbucks "get your tenth cup free" flyers blocking any attempts at filtering.   >:(

I nod/wave at anyone who isn't annoying me, including 125's, scooters, BMW's and Harleys, and if they consider the Wee beneath them I don't care. I mostly assume the ones who respond actually know what they are doing and were probably the ones who were out in January.

I nod at anyone on two wheels, but it's noticeable when I'm on the Beemer that hardly anyone nods back. I think they're in shock that somebody on a BMW actually acknowledged their existence.

About half of other Beemer riders nod back, but that's about it.

On the Fazer it's a different ball game altogether.

Thank goodness it wasn't my imagination and what a sensible bunch you are. I shall carry on nodding because I'm a cheery sort of bloke and I won't take it personally when I'm ignored. However I will probably still mutter wa**er under my helmet!

Is there an international agreement about these comportments ? Do owners of these brands have to sign up for this when they buy their bikes ?

Bonjour SRXweb,

Non, il n'est pas nĂ©cessaire de s'inscrire. Mais certains obtiennent le plaisir de coller leurs tĂȘtes leur anus et elle semble avoir un effet similaire quel que soit le pays d'origine.  ???

Slainte, Bill.

Or, do you buy the bike because you've already signed up?

;D Excellent. Love this type of humour.

Is it humour ?  ;)

Good grammar TheMoudie. There's an expression in France that could be "by farting higher than your bottom, it takes the place of the head"

Merci, SRXweb,

What's the difference between Welsh and Breton between friends anyway?

As for blowing your brains away after a good meaty Madras curry, with dal and stout!  ::) Oh of course, that's what an "Airhead" is!  :)

Does bratwurst and Budwieser have the same effect?  ??? Lacking in fibre and certainly not in the same class as a good "topinambour"!  ;)  Aye AndyM, you know what the routine is.

As for being Welsh, no I wasn't born there, I haven't ever lived there, but "Yes" I have visited there and I've always enjoyed the company of the people, the food and the country.

Au revoir, Bill.

No change in the last 30 years then.
