Could go for the "You never listen to a word I say!" option and fake a rage when she questions the bike whilst telling her you discussed this months ago! If she refuses to go for it, follow up with the "You're losing your mind" counter as she can't even remember the conversation!

I've used the "You never listen to a word I say!" in the past with some effect. Must choose the right moment, when other news etc is dominating ie she has bought ANOTHER pair of boots.
Trouble is we are broke and I did acquire it 10 months ago in monthly instalments.
The trouble with Steffans approach is that she is the head of the household and any dissent always leads to trouble...............

Go for the "It'll save us money in the long run" approach. Old bikes depreciate less, new bikes save the cost of the MOT, small bikes use less petrol, big bikes will wear less as they are less stressed.............

Maybe this only works on accountants though?

How about...........

{ Adopting an 'allo 'allo accent..}

" You stupid woman....Can you not see that this is NOT  a motorcycle. This has been supplied to me by the local health authority as a surgical simulator.  Stripping and cleaning the carbs simulates a quadriple by pass. Replacing the anti freeze simulates having ones stomach pumped. Anything to do with the air box corresponds to midwifery......."

I don't think Andys approach will work as this expects swmbo to think logically like a man. The "Allo Allo" approach is certainly worth a punt as long as I don't loose it and bottle out in the middle of it.

You may want to drop the "Stupid woman" bit, John.  I would.

Who knows. Who wants to know. It could involve a fad diet, beetroot and some club that charges five quid a go to laugh at how fat you are. If could involve house related DIY. It could be worse than that  :o

Whats the worst she can do.............. I still have the ultimate defence strategy.  She once forgot our wedding anniversary. I was saving that for something really big.

As for Steffan he has God on his side, presuming he isn't a she. (I mean God not Staffan)

That's it. Tell her it's an anniversary present.

I think you'd have better luck handing Steff over than the keys to a bike (which you would of course never see again).

I once told Karen that if she didn't tell me what she wanted for Christmas soon enough to avoid the shopping rush I'd buy her a set of pans. Sure enough, Christmas Eve three badly wrapped pan shaped parcels appeared under the tree (actually filled with the real pressies). Needless to say the most appropriate carol would have been "Silent Night".

One Valentines my wife said " Don't get me chocys or flowers ...get me something useful"......so I bought her a new fork handle.....I even stuck a ribbon and a little heart on it.......it didn't go down too well.......I still get a twinge in cold weather.... :( :(
