I've ridden in Europe quite a lot. I've always used maps. Been lost countless times but I've ended up either in interesting places or the place I intended by a different route.
Sad, but I really like looking at a Michelin and map and then completely failing to follow the planned route.

do i know you oz? as it sounds like you have been on at least 1 of our runs to colditz
this is how it will normally pan out! ....
atleast 3 out of the 4 - 8 of us will have satnav tucked in to an unknown panier or luggage flap,pocket or zip and there all three will stay ! so then off the boat at the hook quick snack and look at the map and route we all planed for the last 2-3 months then back on the bikes 100 miles down the road check map have a cig then over the boarder... 190 miles in the wrong direction into the fartherland out come all the maps repeat that last step as many times as req til you find yourself at the end of the run or out of daylight/energy then start it all over again !
