Fantastic Radio 4 documentary

I didn't know much about Arnold Ridly who played Godfrey in Dads Army, so THIS PROGRAMME was a real eye opener. I recommend having a listen.

For some weird reason I was looking up what happened to the Dads Army cast last week (we have a full collection here, Oliver watches them incessantly).  Some real stars amongst them, especially Arnold.  Top man.

Many have passed on but a few, noteably the vicar, Corporal Jones and his girlfriend, plus Ian Lavender are still soldiering (sic) on.

We just had a listen to it.  Fascinating stuff indeed. 

The book which was mentioned is available on Amazon and gets some good reviews.

i heard it, fascinating, shot, bayonetted, bombed fought in the somme, re enlisted in ww2, then had a breakdown, then his house was blown up by a v1 then he joined the home guard (only dads army cast member to have actually been in the home guard)  and a career on the stage and writing plays. a really interesting tale and well worth a listen! it really does read like a fictional tale. but in fiction you would never cast bumbling godfrey as the action hero!!!

Of course in the series he turns out to be a conscientious objector during WW1, but who won a medal for his bravery.  MM or MC I think.

Which puts one beautifully over on Mainwaring who served in 1919.
