Hmm, I'll grant it's news, however only a football fan could possibly argue that it's "big" news.

I will confess to being heart sick of having (certainly in the area I grew up) constant media coverage of football being shoved down my throat to the exclusion of most other sports.
For any sport, to have half a main national news broadcast dedicated to a subject which will only affect a limited number of fans of that sport, I'm quite sure less than half the population of England, let alone the rest of the UK, whilst there are a great many "serious" issues affecting, or potentially affecting many more, is imho horribly innapropriate.
If a world champion motorsports participant was killed it wouldn't get a fraction of the coverage (for example Colin MacRae), why should football be different? The fact is a great many of us have absolutely no interest whatsoever in the sport and are sick of being told about it.
I would argue that whilst the world perhaps needs to know, that story should be with the rest of the sports news,
after
the non-sports stories!
