If its a clean rebuild then its worth making sure the pump is well primed. In the past I have, blocked the retrun feed into the tank, and then put a low pressure air line onto the oil tank to encourage the oil through the pump whilst kicking it over, only when I see oil in an empty the filter chamber will I start the bike.

If its just a top-end rebuild then the pump should still be primed. So I would
- Remove the small bleed bolt on top of filter housing
- remove plug
- kick the bike over until oil coming out of bleed hole
- replace bleed bolt and plug

Does it have an oil cooler ?

if you have an oil cooler, and you've fitted a new oil filter ( i hope), once the oil cooler and filter housing are filled with oil, and the various cavities in the engine (wells under the cams etc) are filled up you'll find your oil level will be about right. i think the reccommended method for checking for correct oil level is.... go for a run on the bike.... about 20 mins.... then stand the bike (not running) for 10 mins, then, with the bike upright (not leaning on the side stand) check the level.

Aye beezer764,

I am quoting from the SRX600 Owners Manual. :)

"When checking the oil level, do not screw the oil level gauge (dipstick) into the oil tank. Insert the gauge lightly (rest it on the orifice!). Check with the machine held upright. If the oil level is between the minimum and maximum level lines on the gauge, you may start the engine. If there is no oil on the gauge, add oil so that it reaches the minimum level.

Start the engine and warm up until the oil temperature rises to approximately 60C (140F). Oil filter housing and external cases are 'hot' to touch! "OUCH!" ;)

Idle the engine for a further 10 seconds, whilst keeping the machine upright. Then stop the engine and check the oil level on the gauge whilst the machine is upright.

Adjust the oil level to the maximum level line."

I'd have thought 2.1litres would have been fine. Make sure you prime the oil filter chamber by the method outlined by SteveH or by engaging a gear and pushing it about until the oil comes out the bleed bolt hole on top of the housing.

Capacities listed for the European machines without an oil cooler are: "Total volume = 2.4litres, Periodic oil change = 2.0litres, With oil filter replacement = 2.1litres, Oil tank capacity = 1.8litres."

All the best and have a grand Xmas, with a healthy 2012.  :)

My regards, Bill.
