Hard on the wrists
« on: September 11, 2011, 06:10:43 PM »

Ok perhaps I'm a wimp but my SRX400 has low clip on's, I find ridding it is not that much fun. I get off with my right palm in pain. And the leaning over the bike while looking good becomes a pain after an hour or so.

Am I woos? Would I do the bike a disservice if I put some raised bars on the SRX?

No, I did that to the GB and it was miles better. Nobody wants to ride a long distance while looking like a monkey on a stick. And low-speed control improves enormously when the bars are higher.

Are they the standard clip-ons or after market bars ?
I personally prefer the clip-ons as in my view it improves the handling, the bike seems to work well with weight over the front wheel (a tank bags also improves things). When it comes down to it it is very much a personal choice of how you ride.

The bars are an after market set up that can twist and turn on several joints. They originally were much lower than the standard, I moved them as much as I could so they are now a little higher than standard but they are still forward of the original. Much more comfortably than they were.

If I could source the original would like to try them out.

Any new bars I fit (not standard) I will have to change the brake hose and may be even extend the electrics.

Are they fitted above or below the top-yoke ?

If it's any use as a comment, I find the standard bars to be just fine with no wrist ache etc. So, recommend you try some of them before putting the raised bars on.

I have a pair of standard bars with the locking pin part of the casting removed so can be used either above or below the top yoke. Will dig them out and put a photo of them on here.

Thanks for all the replies

Below are a couple of pictures of the bike. one with the old position and one with the new which turns the bars upside down.

Now it probably is that the bike was designed to be a cafe racer so the tank is longer and your meant to take the stance. Its also that this is my first bike in a while and I'm just looking for the simple fun of biking and leaning over a tank pretending to race is not fun for me any more. I was sitting on a number of my friends bikes and most felt more comfortably than my SRX.

I really want a thumper with a thumping note but perhaps I should let my bike go to a home for some one who would appreciate and look for say an MT-03

I have both an SRX400 (mono-shock) and an MT-03.

If I could only have one, I would choose the SRX400.

However, at present my SRX is still sadly waiting to be fixed again so it's the MT-03 that's the winner!

Don't get me wrong, the MT-03 is great until you buy spares, service the beast and put petrol in it and then it proves more expensive than the SRX. Also, it is rotting away faster than my 21 year old SRX. They definitely don't make them like they used to!!

Since I'm going to the show in October, I'm putting off any mods as it would distract from the bikes set up.

The stuff I have read about the SRX400 is all good. 80+Mpg, not much to go wrong etc. Perhaps if I extend the brake hose a little so I can get the bars into the normal position it will make me happier.

Also I have a problem with the carb I thought I fixed. It runs out of fuel if you open the throttle up for more than 5 mins eg motorway. With it running right the fun might come back :)

What I would really like is a SRX600 mono shock with electric start. They look really nice!
