Motad Exhaust system for XBR 500 Honda
« on: July 18, 2011, 03:39:53 PM »
I today talked to Motad exhaust systems in the UK. They are prepared to make a short run of ten systems in chrome to their patterns at approx 300 pounds each. However, they want orders up front. Given the non availability of the origional systems from Honda, is anyone else out there interested and prepared to put their money up to get one of these systems? I had one on a 250 RS Honda , and it lasted for the three years I had the bike with very little signs of wear. Anybody else out there interested...??

Great timing. I spoke to Ian McDonald of Motad at the Uttoxeter show and he said he'd be really happy to make a new exhaust system for the XBR as long as enough people actually placed an order. He said he would rather make a 2-2 instead of the 2-1 system that they made in the past, but I'm guessing most owners would prefer to have something that resembled the standard system anyway. I'd been meaning to bring this subject up but you beat me to it.

It might be worth clarifying what they would be prepared to make (2-1 or 2-2). I'm happy either way. My Motad 2-1 lasted 15 years and I was happy(ish!) to pay £175 for a clean secondhand one that came up on Ebay a few years ago. I will commit to buying a new system... let me know how.

What this needs is a club press release to the national mags asking for more XBR owners to commit to buying an exhaust. I can do that if it's OK with you all. I'd rather not be the point of contact so should I say contact you Oldbanger or go straight to Motad?

Not sure what they would quote for a new 2into 2 system. The 300 indication was , as I understood it , for a 2 into 1 as they had the jig/plans for it from way back.Think better if the Club organised , I would be in for one ....which makes two of us. Any one else ?? Couls the Club put the question ??

I will get onto Ian McDonald this week and report back. I spoke to TCer Tony Ross this weekend and he is up for one. The general opinion seems to be that a 2-2 would be the more sensible option given the bike's supposed classic status (and therefore status as a viable restoration project). Most owners would now be more interested in getting the bike restored than in making it a scratcher.

I agree, but what will the 2/2 system cost and will the downpipe be double skinned as the origionals were ? Also ,I agree that the Club pilots this one , better to all flow through them for orders etc.

I am currently building a cafe racer from my XBR, I am fitting a Dominator 650 engine, if the exhausts are the same I would be interested in the 2-2 downpipes.

a very old post- but in the end David Silver was the man willing to commit

we have made an all stainless steel/10 year warranty system that looks (kind of) similar to the original

available from David Silver at £399
