Just defrosted my frost-free freezer, again...

What a joke. I know it is a Becko and not a Hotpoint, but if it claims to be frost-free, then that is exactly what it should be. It's out of guarantee, but still less than 5 years old and this is a job that needs doing every 2 months or so. For info, the thermostat is set at position 3 out of 5 inside the fridge and the freezer itself has no thermostatic setting device.

The first warning you get are the pizzas don't feel quite as stiff as they should be when you take them out! Then you know it's that special time to remove all the contents, tilt the machine back by about 5 degrees, attach the bespoke half milk carton and hose to its underside drain pipe, and start the warm-water defrost after removing the internal backing cover. I think I have become a bit of an expert on this job as I can do it all in less than half an hour!

I suppose alternatively, I could save up lots of money and buy a Hotpoint.

Why not just bring it inside?

Steam cleaners are great for this.

try looking for it on the uk white goods forum, (yes such a place does exist!!) there are listings for most household white goods and a list of their common faults and how to repair them and where to get the parts!!

Egad, the joys of the interweb! Just browsed one of the forums and it appears that there is a heater inside the freezer (on the evaporator bit) that is used periodically to make it frost free... see, I'm getting all technical now I've been busy studying.

My immediate thoughts are that this heater is knackered, hence why the frost builds up. the forum also indicates that they are hard to change and are often made integral with the evaporator and so the price may be high! Maybe I'll just live with the periodic manual defrost.

Aye Hackers,

Supposed to be more economical to repair if less than 6 years old. I think I would wind the b*ggers up and get it sorted. Fridge /freezers aren't as reliable as individual appliances, but I understand that you may not have the room to house the two. Seems a right pain in the Balearics, to have to defrost every two months a self defrosting machine.

ive a samsung american style fridge freezer, and found the uk white goods forum invaluable when i had a similar problem, i got the heater for under a tenner and fitted it myself in about 15 minutes and its been spot on ever since.
