Lazy about stuff on your own doorstep?
« on: February 05, 2011, 09:54:05 PM »
I'm sure most of us are pretty lazy about the attractions of our home towns. How many people who live in York visit the cathedral? How many people in Glastonbury walk up to the Tor?

I was thinking about this today because we made a family decision to go to Southerndown beach, where wind-driven waves crashed onto a spectacular rocky shore. This impressive spot is a mere half hour (fast) drive from my home in the city of Cardiff and yet I hardly ever go there.

Here is the family Carrick (using a poor mob camera):

Here is Southerndown in better weather:

(the tide is in so you can't see the lovely beach)

In fact most of the Welsh coast from just west of the city looks like this.

What have you got in your part of the world that you neglect and/or take for granted?

When I lived in Wigan I rarely visited the Pier.
Now in Spain we make the most of the fantastic mountains around here.

I like it here  :)

I once met a bloke who said that when he lived in Cardiff he'd swum Tiger Bay.

Very impressive, especially as Tiger Bay is actually the name given to the residential area adjoining Cardiff's Docklands  :D :D :D :D

The Cliffs along the Nullabor in South Australia. Not quite on the doorstep at over 1200 km,but worth the drive
These cliffs are 75-100meters high and run for about 200 km( unbroken).  The 1st pic is a shot of the forest along the Nullabor, which means No (null) Trees (abor) in latin.

The family Squirrel virtually live at Rest Bay in the summer. It's just up the coast from Southerndown/Ogmore. Last weekend we took the pooch to Merthyr Mawr which is also along that stretch of coast. Huge sand dunes that you can tobogan down. Loads of fun. ;D

What does it say about me that my first thought about this picture was "that would make a good trials section"  ;)

My mind really does work like that and yet I haven't had a dirt bike for over ten years now  :o ::)
It's an itch that I need to scratch.

I know a guy who's just swum halfway across Australia.

It can be done if the conditions are right. ::)

i've lived in cornwall / devon folr 35 years. been to lands end once and only made it to the eden project last year for the first time last year. incidentally, if any one is down this neck of the woods, i'd strongly recomend checking it out, particularly if you are of a horticultural persuasion. The beer  and pasty's are great too.

Here in Lincolnshire we have a great aviation history ( Bomber County) and there is an official airfields trail where you can visit the sites of several of the old WW2 airfields, several small local Museums and of course the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and 617 (Dambusters) Memorial. It was years until I finally made the effort to complete the trail- none of the sites are more than 30 minutes drive away - but I finally did so a couple of years ago and it's well worth it. The roll call on the 617 Squadron memorial really brings home just how many died.

Growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional!

Actually the stream/river ford is the start of a stone road which leads up and over the mountains, see other pic. If you fancy off-roading the trails from here are between an hour and 12 hours round trip, rising from 600metres above sea level to over 2000m.   :) I really do like it here  :)
