The dreaded tyre thread....
« on: January 26, 2011, 05:48:05 AM »
Sorry I did a quick search but couldn't find what I was looking for, has anyone here used Avon distanzia tyres?

I used Avon venoms on the dragstar and sportster and found them to be a good balance of grip/handling and hard wearing and high mileage.

Then I used Avon storms and storm ultra 2's on my buell, and again was blown away by the grip, they're as good in the wet as in the dry and warm up nicely too, but I'm not sure whether to try their recommended tyres for the dr as they look quite chunky. Am wondering if it'd just be better to try and get the venoms or something in the right size?

If you plan to use it on road only the concensus seems to be that Bridgestone BT45's or Avon RoadRiders are the best. Personal opinion: the BT45's are the best gripping non-radials I've used, but they don't last as long as the Avons.

The Distanzias have quite a following on the XT660 forum. Personally I don't like Avons having had several bad experiences with them.
What are you wanting from the tyre?
Just road?
Tyre technology has moved on quite a bit from BT45s, if you are wanting a primarily road based tyre then I would recommend Pirelli Scorpion Trails, if you want a bit more bite but not a serious off road tyre then Michelin Anakee2.
I've ridden dirty, muddy, gravel and snow covered roads just fine on the Pirellis, in fact also on my Girlfriends old Bandit 600 with Pilot Sports.

In my limited experience of big traillie tyres I like the Distanzia's.  Originally a mate with an XT600 recommended them.

I have tried a few years ago Michelin Anakee's (not Anakee2; courtesy of a very kind donation by SteveD), and wore them out quite happily.  The last set I put on were Distanzia's.  Not the cheapest, but I like em.

I only ride round london, and occaisionally longer motorway trips (to bath, bristol, peterboro, brum).

I am needing new tyres now, so let us know what you go for.

I think I will fit myself as I am saving the pennies.  I swore I wouldn't do it again after the last time, but maybe I'm better now...?!  I got my last car tyres from black circles.co.uk, so will try them first.

Distanzias for me too please. Love 'em. Tried the Metzeler tourances' but didn't like the feel through corners. Never gave way, just felt like they might. I've used the Avons on my honda dommie and my XT600, but only on the road, never in the mud though.

I'll be using them on road only, just want a good grippy tyre, not liked my experience with dunlops and bridgestones though, might be giving the distanzias a go, both tyres are getting low and both have slow punctures lol

Aye DR650rs,

As Andy230 says, try 'http://www.blackcircles.com/tyres' for a price.

Purchased winter tyres for the wee Micra in November 2010. Not the cheapest, but service from the local fitter (own choice) was very good and he couldn't match there supply and fit price and didn't know where they had found winter tyres for the Micra either!

I used Tourance radials on a Funday F650 and found them very good, but use Avon RoadRiders on the SRX600 and Bros400 in preference to Bridgestone BT45's, Metzelers, Dunlop and Pirelli. Continental haven't been given a try and maybe worth a look and Maxxis are also competative on price. Dave Bickers ex-motocrosser, is the main importer.

Regards, Bill.

I use the maxxis on the fazer 1000 ok for road lasts about 6-7k on the back I like the feel etc and am about to get another set when the finances allow. Took them on a wet cold track day ummmmmmm steping out on bends at 80+ not so good.
Had distanzia's on an old tenere 600 and loved them but I really didn't take it off road to find out if they worked on the dirt.
We all get Heavier as we get Older because there is a lot more information in our heads

Maybe I'm being a bit too scottish, but I am not that enamoured at buying a pair of distanzias at 140 quid delivered....

Booo!!

each one is significantly dearer than the Vredstein car tyres I put on the scimiwotsit

I tried the regular Distanzias and didn't like them at all, swapped them for BT45's. The 17" Distanzia SuperMotos that I have on my other wheels are so different from the regular Avons, much grippier in all conditions.
