Sadly, my experience of UK Plod pre "y2k" was that they were disinterested jobsworths who were there just to meet their "target points" and "screw the rest of you with a genuine problem".

Seems to depend on the area, where I lived a few years ago I'd have agreed, Fife Police however were extremely efficient and hardworking (really, I was surprised at first and then impressed). Where I am now, I don't know yet but first impressions have been good.

Best not to tar everyone with a big brush, can often leave one feeling rather foolish when you meet the exception later

Was in Greater Manchester. 3 burglaries in 4 years, to say the police were indifferent would be to exagerate their interest. 
and that was an improvement on the days of "god's copper" James Anderton, Chief Constable, 1980's !

Understandable then!! It is crap when those who are supposed to care don't. Makes the whole thing a bit pointless  and sh1t for all those on the receiving end.
