CG with no spark
« on: April 20, 2010, 07:46:05 PM »
Hi Guys

Having though the CG had a  dead short I got the generator back plat off to get at the wires - and all seems ok.  Now the symptoms I have are that the baby will not spark, and opening and closing the points seems to make no difference at all.  Looking at the wiring diag, the points earth out the ignition coil of the generator - with the coil also attached to earth the other end - so I guess there should be some resistance or sommat in the windings.  My ohm meter detects none.  I cannot find any specs for the resistance the coil should show.

Can any of you bright bloks find the data I need?  Suggest something? I may be using the wrong setting on the meter.

Not sure I qualify as bright but here goes anyway !

What range is your meter set to ?

Unusual for the ignition generator coil to fail , I'd suggest just a simple set up first to eliminate the kill switch (?) or ignition switch - both of which short the black/white to ground stop the bike .

IE Just disconnect both and see if there is a spark with the engine wound over , if not check for an ac voltage from the generator with the coil etc disconnected , points clean & gapped ok , condensor ok not shorted ?

Tricky with a direct ignition set up as you need to kick and diagnose at the same time - best of luck !
