Bargain of the week

Some of you will have seen my venerable Dainese Anchorage jacket, it looks like this:

I bought it in late 1995 and it has been working well ever since, despite once writing off a car whilst wearing it (the shoulder pads allowed me to push back the front lip of a car's roof with my shoulder as I flew into it after impact). It's still waterproof and is really warm.

However, it has started looking tatty and I have always been aware that I bought it a size too large. Imagine my delight when I was talking to an old biking friend the other day and the conversation turned to bike jackets:
JB - "You still have that old jacket then?"
me - "Yep, but it's been in the wars a bit"
JB - I remember you buying it and I was so impressed with it I bought one too at the same time, but I've hardly worn mine"
me - How's it look?"
JB - "Like new... do you fancy buying it, say £50?"

The jacket cost around £350 new!

So, I now have a an exact replacement for the best bike jacket I have ever owned, one size smaller and like new for £50  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

It's nice when it happens eh?

What a bargain!...it's nice when that happens.

Some years ago I was at a local car boot when I spotted a pair of 'Swagman' throw over panniers.  I was have a quick look - they were like new - when the chap on the stall came over.

Him - ' they're for a motorbike mate"
Me - ( In leathers with helmet) ..er yes I know.....what were you asking?.... ( they were about £70 new at the time)
Him - Well it's my mates stall and he's gone for a cuppa..................£5?
Me - ( thrusting fiver in his hand trying to look nonchalant).....er...OK....here you go.....thanks..........( exits stage left at warp 9 to the car park and legged it quick!!!)

I don't know if the stallholder was still his mate when he came back from his cuppa.....

Still have mine, purchased in 1974 and as good as ever, not likely to part with either as they are good over the tank or the saddle.

Toodle pip, Bill.

Isn't it just the best feeling when that happens? I swear I get a rush of blood when haggling goes that well. A set of Swagmans for a fiver, superb.

I was talking about haggling and bargain hunting the other day with the bloke I bought the jacket from. He trades in motorcycles via his website. He's been a bike trader for over 30 years. He's known for being a bit ruthless, in fact last Wednesday he turned up with a complete, straight, Honda Firestorm he just bought for £500 ( :o). He always says, as does my genius haggler brother, that he just offers the seller a price, explains why he isn't prepared to pay more and leaves the decision entirely to them. I, on the other hand, always try to be fair about the price... I'll die poor, that's for sure.

My brother has, once again, beaten me hands down. He's just bought a pair of hardly worn BMW-branded Goretex leather boots - £15  :o

One of my best deals in the past was a complete but non-running XBR for free. Its Predator stainless exhaust is still on my sidecar outfit. In fact once my engine comes back from the mechanic I will be slotting it into that rolling chassis, complete with the previous owner's idiosyncratic Bing carb conversion.
