On my Sunbeam S8 project I am looking to see if I can find an alternator to go inside what would have been the dyanmo housing and so convert to 12v while keeping its classic looks intact. I dont have much room so my question is what bike has the smallest alternator you can think of. It needs to be self contained not the sort with the magnet on the crank and winding in the casing.

Something along the lines of this.

Ken,have a look on the Realclassic website.There was an article on there quite recently about converting an Ariel square four to an alternator.It may give you some ideas.

You want issue 32 December 2006, it about 1/3 of the way down. An alternator convertion and Concentric carb convertion. Looks like it's available as a back issue.

I had seen the conversion Steve but its almost £400.00 mind you a new dyanmo is nealy the same.

I have a friend who (if I remember correctly) has installed a 2nd hand BMW R1150 alternator and ignition on the front end of a Velo Valiant!

Would you like me to ask? If I'm correct, would you like some info? I might add that this man is adept at the 'lateral' thinking! and nifty at the machining.

May be worth having a furtle around on the Velocette Owners Site too....I think they were using an alternator off a Kubota "something" - not sure what it was, but it worked, was quite readily available & not overly expensive.  In fact, if I remember right, it was something the Kubota equipment owners were throwing away ??

I have received a reply from my friend Mike. This is it in full:

 "Hi Bill.
 
I've just fitted an Alton Alternator which is really compact, (see attachments). They also do one which fits in place of a 3" dia. dynamo.
It knocks out 90watt continuous with 150 watt max.!"
