Cogitating about new tyres
« on: January 14, 2010, 10:14:08 PM »
Dont think I like the tyres on my MT-03 as I think they are a bit suspect. It came with different makes front/back and the front I believe is supposed to be a super sticky one, and the rear a normal one. Wear marks i.e. girly bands, are very odd. Rear unused rubber is about 10-15mm, while the front has huge huge huge amounts. So, methinks the matching of them is poor which may explain the twitchyness. OK, I admit it, I feel a little nervous at times as it feels like it flops into corners in a funny way.

So, been perusing the interweb and found these as a recommendation: Avon Distanzia AM43/4.
Anyone ever used them? Heard anything about them?

Standard tyres are Dunlop Sportmax D270 which look very much like the Avons.

I use the Avon Distanzias on an MT350 and find them very good on the road(sh1t off road as you can imagine), suits the 350 power ok(or rather lack of it) but don't know how they'd be on something with more horses.

Spoke with a guy who's got them on a 600 and he swears by them....and they're reasonably priced.
There exists a set of people who believe 2>4

What size are your rims on the MT? I'm thinking 17" diameter front and back?
You could look at some of the Goldspeed SuMo type tyres from here- http://www.aaa-racing.com/home.php?cat=79
Especially the 'street sports'- http://www.aaa-racing.com/home.php?cat=80
This place- http://www.motorcycletyres.uk.com/products.php still lists the Dunlop GPR80, a great tyre I used to use on my SuMo DR600, and KR-1S.
I'm not a fan of Avons. Big slides when I rode a ZX12R with Storms fitted, and my GPZ500 was never happy with them on either.

I have a Distanzia on the rear of my Africa Twin, never had any problems with it.When it wears out I will probably get a Tourance to match the front although the cost of those is steep.

I used the Avons on my Dommie and loved them on all road conditions. Did try the Metzeler tourance, but didn't like them at all. The Avons gave me about 8.5 - 9k miles on the rear and double that for the front. OK on forestry tracks but sh1te on anything else off road. Other good thing about them is you can get both front and back and still have change from £100. I got mine via M & P and fitted them myself.

Excellent answers guys!

In response,
Front wheel size is 17 M/C x MT3.50 and runs a 120/70 tyre
Rear wheel size is 17 M/C x MT5.00 and runs a 160/60 17 tyre.

The most off-roading I would do is going into a camp site. Think I might do some more research on the Distanzias and the Dunlops and maybe break open the piggy bank
