Anybody know anything about trailers??

I've just bought a new trailer, probably a tad too big for your needs though, it's a 5'x3' box trailer with a hinged door at the rear and it's perfect for transporting my cement mixer. It will also double up as our bicycle transporter for summer hols.

I couldn't really afford it, but I've been keeping an eye out for one and I saw it parked on a drive with a 'for sale' sign on it. The haggling was a bit intense, but I got a good percentage knocked off and I was pleased with the final figure. I was less pleased when I tested the lights (which were perfect) and then removed the trailer, forgetting the electric connection, tearing all the wires from the connector  However, that's an easy fix and less troubling than the task of telling wifey that I've bought it. For now I've got it stashed in the garage waiting for a suitable moment to tell her... which could be some time

Had a Squire D10 (their smallest, 2 wheel trailer) hitched to W650 last year. Totally stable, handles fine inc braking, except v slight understeer accelerating out of roundabouts. Still have hitch and trailer, plan to fit (some time!) onto CX500, if I can mention that bike here. Bought the trailer 2nd hand but still VERY pricey. My logic (?) was wanted to try trailer experience, but thought maybe a crap one would be...crap, so try a good one first.

Long term plan is: set up trailer hitch on CX, get it right, then try with cheap trailer (eg Halfords one). If ok, SELL posh trailer! Cheap trailer can stand on its end in garage.

Things you might think about:
**takes up lots of space in garage (single wheel much better!)

**costs a FORTUNE on ferry. Perhaps only UK use.

**lower speed limit (not that cameras would notice)

** PAVs look gorgeous, but that tiny wheel is VERY tiny. If making yr own, maybe go for modern scooter wheel, ie ten inch? Friend of mine into old scooters is thinking this way, planning to turn back half of an old scooter into a trailer.

**Can't get much on a PAV. If making yr own, have seen single wheel trailer with Givi side rails added, so you can put PANNIERS on it. Seemed clever.


Whatever you do, I'm sure lots of us would be interested to see how it works out. It does seem a solution to camping with yr other half, esp long trips. And if you are in Scotland, you could borrow my trailer for testing purposes while building a hitch.

That's kind of bin my problem... after I got a trailer, my partner bought a car. Hence trailer not getting much use, and not much impetus to hitch it to another bike. Cars, eh?

You might find Halfords trailers too wide for Motorcycle use !

Bike trailer maximum over all width 1m.

Used to think along similar lines, until I went camping next to the guy with the trailer/sidecar. Watching the 6 perth tent/folding chairs/double airbed/2 ring cooker/tantern/crate of beer/ etc etc get unloaded soon had me thinking . The way I see it, a trailer will allow me to haul enough kit to make camping luxurious whilst keeping the bike narrow. Once base camp is set up, all I have to do is un-hitch and I'm back to a solo for running about on.

Done enough years 'minimalist' to deserve a little comfy time
