Anybody know anything about trailers??
« on: October 23, 2009, 07:39:24 PM »
After the last trip to Dent, I've been thinking about a trailer to pull behind the VX. Anybody got any thoughts?? I know 002 and Bruce have used them, anyone else??

One of the Cossack guys had this tesco trolley converted into a trailer. Had to admire the load carrying capacity and the single wheel design if not the looks.

Sort of like the thought of hauling kit for me and pillion without cramping up the bike space or bolting a chair perminently along side.

Over to the engineers :)

I've seen a couple of nice homemade jobs that used generic car roofboxes on trailers built from parts/salvage.
Like the bought ones but four figures cheaper ( :o ) and built to suit the bike...

If you're tempted to look up the commercially available ones make sure you're sitting down in a comfy chair with a stiff drink close by and Mrs Squirrel on standby with a damp cloth to mop your brow once you come round.....

He wasn't short with a moustache and from the Isle of Wight was he? Went by the name of Alistair?

On another note, the Pav trailers are beautiful little things and pull brilliantly.

That Pav looks like a great use for the back end of a Vespa or Lambretta - with the engine removed and some filler welded in of course...

Dam I used to have a hammered out %gal tank from the Triton - would have run about 7 gals if it had a bottom and did nto leak - that would have made a cute but small trailer....

The Pav chassis looks doable and then imagination for the 'box'.  With Pats skills with the galss fibre - as show by the tank he made - an oversize rep of the VX tank would look good.

Somewhere on the web there is a detailed PDF image of the chassis. It's certainly very doable if you are handy with a welder. The hitch is really well designed, very simple but very effective. Self made is really the way to go as genuine Pav's are pretty expensive.  Maybe a large topbox for the 'box'?

This is a doozie, there are also some photos on this site somewhere, where the owner does a long trip with the trailer.

In OZ we need to pay registration fees for trailers, so the little ones don't get too much attention. Our Ulysses club has several members with a wide variety of trailers including double bed campers.

Oh yes I know Alistair! been drunk with him many times!!  He used to organise the 'Klatchian Foreign Legion rally' on the Isle of Wight for the Cossack Club and friends. Had the grungiest cossack outfit known as 'Biopsy Byaxe'. He made the Tesco trailer to annoy the Goldwings! Sound bloke!

Re Pav trailers - there is one on Ebay for £595!!

Having never tried one of these I would be worried that if you had to brake hard and were not completley straight  that it would push you and make the rear wheel skid out more so in the wet.

Heavy bike with a pillion maybe OK.

In the past I have towed a trailer behind my TDM850 and it is fine up to about 70mph. As i don't currently have a bike with a tow hitch you would be more than welcome to borrow the trailer to see how you get on.

Thanks guys, I knew you lot would come up trumps.

I'm defineately not thinking of buying a ready made one, I'm far too tight. I'm planning on getting a MIG set soon and learning the fine art of welding, then attempting to make my own. I was thinking of using a 12" wheel, swingarm and damper off a pit bike and fabricating a chassis to mount a car topbox too.

I'll read and inwardly digest the links thanks, and ponder some more, but I reckon this Idea's a goer.

Thanks again and keep 'em coming ;D

Pat,

Do a search on this site for 'bike trailers'.  There was a similar thread earlier this year where I posted the PDF of the Pav on page 2.  I've tried to copy & paste the picture but it won't let me. The PDF shows how straightforward the Pav chassis is - you should be able to copy it no problem.

Basically as with everything....you ride accordingly.
You do have to be careful of how you load it,weight bias,as you would with any trailer.

Dont do as I did and carry far too much and too heavy.
Found mine great on A roads and Motorways.Could get upto 90mph with out much bother.
But when loaded and on twisty roads and roundabouts I did find it interesting to say the least.
But not enough to put me off.
Still got my BMW 80/100GS tow Bar and the home made trailer is waiting to be tried out behind my outfit.
Have had it behind a Trike and managed to touch a ton on the way to Builth Wells one year chasing a GSXR and had no bother  ;D
