Considering Abigail (my cafe racer project XBR) is supposed to look like it was made in the 60's, what should I do with the inner crank cases??

My first thought was to paint them silver, but now I'm thinking bare alloy. Outer cases polished and head & barrel in black with rough case alloy inner cases seems more probable for a bike in the 60's don't you think??

This might get thrown into the 'projects' section, but really it's a chatter topic on what an engine in a 69's cafe racer should look like.

Come on, you've must all have an opinion.

I'll second that pat.  You also want something fairly easy to live with.  Outer cases can be done with Solvol, Inners wiped down with WD-41 (Its one higher).

I hope you borrow the solvol and WD41, I would be shocked and perversely disappointed if I thought you (as a  proud Scotsman) were wasting money on such frivolities

Ah, well mate, I don't have em.  But I would at least expect Pat, as a moneybags welchman, will have all this and more in his shed!

Latest money-saving credit crunching tips-

New front pipe for the DR.  Bought last year, 20 quid.  Can-header joint effected with (Tesco value) bean can and recycled clamps (stainless, mind!)
Cleaned the bike with white spirit I found in the loft. 
Painted barrel and pipe with borrowed engine paint
Polished the can with "freebie" polish from a previous kedo order
Painted frame with blue hammerite on special at the local paint shop

I did put an original clutch in it tho!   

And the MZ?

New fan- £60!!!!
temp sensor- about 25 !!!!
And it needs a new chain!  Am gonna wait till the wheel wont go any further back! 
Who said that was budget biking?

Hey, Andy, Why did you need a temp sensor on your MZ?
Was it stuffed or did you change it as per trial and error ?
Any idea what thread the fitting is, as I was looking at installing a temp guage at the idiot light switch sensor.
 I had a fan destroy itself, and as spares are next to impossible in Oz, I used an after market automotive electric fan which was 2/3 the price of a second hand original unit ex USA. With the full fairing of the Traveller, it is relatively well hidden, but those that have noticed it thought I had a Wankel or a turbine in there, LOL.
There should be a foto somewhere in the gallery.
I also rewired it with a switch to manually override the sensor switch. I would also love to fit some sort of oil cooler, but need more imagination as to how and where. BTW has anybody added a cooler to the yamaha 660 engine at any time? If so can I get some details on where to take the oil lines in and out. Temp control is a very important item here in Perth

Hey, Andy, Why did you need a temp sensor on your MZ?

The old one was no longer switching on the fans.  I checked the fans.  1 was goosed, other ok.  So had to buy a fan.  Checked the sensor (room temp and boiling water), both infinite resistance.  So needed to buy one.  Its taking ages to come, so wired in a manual switch for when I am stationary at the lights on a hot day.

Any idea what thread the fitting is

Am told this is the same (a few degrees out on the switching, but nothing major).  And the thread info is there.  saw your fan pics, but mine is naked, and while I'm all for substance over style, I went for OEM fan.  I also have 12v computer fans, which will work ok, but not for too long on a m/c application, and while I can still get OEM bits, I'll not butcher my rad cowling unnecessarily.

My SRX racer had one.... In the return line.  If you want (I nearly chuched it out at the weekend!) I have a Yamaha crankcase fitting (the oil line which plumbs in to the rear  of the motor, uppermost on teh cases (not the feed, which goes nearer to the bottoem), swaged onto an oil line.... you'd have to be a bit clever with a mounting, and the rest, but this would solve one of your problemmms

Thanks for the info Andy, I will be looking into the M14 x1.5 thread as I recon I'll be able to get a bolt/plug or whatever and drill /tap it out to take BSP 1/8, which is about all I can get for temp senders with the gauge kits.
As for the cooler, that was helpful, as I had been planning to use an automotive ally transmission cooler ( around $AUS80..)or similar. I was actually going to use the supply line, but was unsure if it would restrict flow to the pump. The return line is better as there are no hickups with high pressures and flows. I reckon I could use a Subaru heater element (in fact, just a very small radiator and I already have one$AUSfree) I would just need to hide it under the fairing somewhere.
 I need to do a major service soon as I have hit 55,000 klms so all this will be seriously looked at.
