Motor Museums & things to see around Wales - advice
« on: August 02, 2009, 09:41:40 PM »
Hi,

The summer hols this year are going to take place around Ystrad Mynach (seeing the family), so would appreciate suggestions for family days out.

Things that I have got on the list of possibilities is to go to RAF Cosford and see the display there. I hear it is very good and has one of only TSR-2's left in existence (the shame). Are there any motor museums that are worth going to ?

If the weather is good, we will probably try to do some walking around the trails (taf?) nearby ...hopefully find some nice pubs along the way  ::)

The only motor museum I can think of was down Pembrokeshire way,if it still open.
St Fagans near Cardiff should be interesting for all ages.
This site consists of Historic buildings that have been dismantled and reassembeled Brick by Brick from all over Wales.
Including shops,chapels,churches,houses of all sorts.

And of course entrance to most museums are free here in Wales, unless privately owned.

If you are going down near Tenby ( worth a day trip if the weathers nice) there is the Museum of Speed at Pendine - it's good, but very small - don't spend ages getting there, but worth a look if you are nearby.  Also there is The National Gardens of Wales off the A48 near Porthyrhyd - a great day out if you like gardens & things - huge biodome with different 'regions' of the world represented.

Can recommend a couple of castles:-

1) Cardiff Castle, right in the city centre, features old original castle and Pre-Raphalite over-the-top additions
2) Castell Coch (nr. Taffs Wells off A470) a total fantasy castle
3) Caerphilly Castle, very near to Ystrad Mynach (and my home town Blackwood)

Also
4) Cwmcarn Scenic Drive off A467 between Newbridge and Crosskeys

And finally
5) Anywhere in the Brecon Beacons - Llangores Lake is good for kids

Hope this is of some help?

Jethro, Steve and Boyd. Thanks for helpful information - really appreciated. There should be enough things to keep us busy....and the wife away from the shops ;D

Big Pit is a must I reckon, you get to go down a coal mine, guided by ex-miners with a wicked sense of humour, and last time I went it was free.

There's a climbing centre near Brecon that is supposed to be good fun for kids and it would only be a short drive from there to Langors lake for a jaunt in a pedalo. As for Brecon, the town musuem is ok, but the real attraction is the Regimental musuem with all the Rorkes Drift bits and pieces. You can also get a canal boat ride from alongside the theatre in Brecon.

Thanks for the many responses. I will be heading off today, going through Brecon to take in the great scenery and plan to keep away from the motorways as much as possible.

All we need now is good weather!
