From R1 to SRX
« on: June 07, 2009, 10:08:26 PM »
Hi. Just aquired a 1986 SRX600 and its the first one i've ever seen. It was imported 2 years ago and has stood since. Milleage is a genuine 6000 and the general condition compliments the the clock reading. However, I purchased the bike with the knowledge that the piston had picked up, a top end strip confirmed my suspicion, back end of piston is a wipe out with scoring to the bore.

Ok, a new piston and rebore will sort it, but the little end and pin have slightly picked up too. Rest of engine is sound, big end spot on, cam and head unmarked so I don't really want to have change crank. CAN I ream out the little end and new piston then fit an over size pin through? Or have you SRX boffins got a more feasible solution?

Yes I know the R1 and little SRX are like chalk and cheese but I'm really looking forward to the experience so any advice or help will be greatly appreciated. Cheers

Steve

Aye Steve,

Would suggest a phone call to 'Slipstream' and a blether with Martin Sweet.

Have a look through this URL afore you do: http://www.slipstreamtuning.co.uk/home.php

I would advise that you strip the motor as it sounds as though you've had oil starvation and despite the low mileage, the two oil seals, which are a 'non-standard size' peculiar to this oil pump, will have become hardened and unable to do their job. Either buy new genuine Yamaha oil pump ~£90-00 or machine out oil pump body to fit 'standard size' readily available seals.  :'(

Search this site for oil pump threads. Both SteveL and I have had bad experiences with nipping up on the back of pistons for this reason. Dimensions etc in those threads.

SteveL and others I am sure will add their pennyworth in due course.

Sorry to be an old Jonah ??? But persevere and you won't be disappointed  ;D all the time.

If you require workshop manual PM me.

All the best, Bill.

Welcome...you'll find all you need here to sort out your srx.

Whatever else you do....THOROUGHLY clean all the internals and REPLACE the oil pump.

Yes you can get the little end reamed, then sleeved back to the standard pin size.....did it to my first srx, and its done 20k+  including track days, been as good as gold. depending on who does the job, you will have strip the engine, the flywheels are pressed.....I had mine split as i did the bottom end as well, but you can ream the little end in-situ, as Bill said....Martin Sweet is the man to speak to (they are in Kent)

good luck
SteveL
