MZ / XTZ clutch
« on: April 06, 2009, 01:19:48 PM »
Hola!

I put another clutch in the Skorpion at the weekend.  I could still use the old one, but it had started to slip a few hundred miles ago, and I figured burning the steel plates was not an economic (=scottish) way of doing things.

SO!

Looked thru the 3 and a half clutches I got with the race motor, and referenced the XTZ manual.

The clutch which came out was just on the wear limit.  Not below, but almost exactly on.  Which is why slip was detectible under hard pulls with a slightly tuned motor.  Fair enough says I.

So I mic'd all the plates I had, and chose just about the best one.  I'd say its about half way worn?  But this is only a rough guess.  Anyway, put it in, no slip = happy boy.  All for the cost of a pint or so of oil and a horrifically expensive yamaha gasket.  (pinched from the "racer" box! TO REPLACE!!)

Anyway, you know how with brit bikes, if the clutch starts slipping you can bodge in another extra plate, etc?

Well, (I was amazed at this), from new spec, to the wear limit, per plate, is only 0.2 mm!!  I thought this was amazing?  Just about the limit of my (not very good) measuring tools.

I know that x8 plates = 1.6 mm, but there was almost no (visible) difference between the worn clutch I took out, my absolutely shot race clutch (and why am I keeping that?!) and the nearly new race clutch I put in.

Aye Andy,

Had those delights today! If you don't load up the thrust pin against the face plate, it causes a lot of grief!

Started it up with fresh Halfrauds bike semi-synth and coolant and all appeared well. ;D Wouldn't take throttle >:( >:( >:(

Removed carbs to find water/condensation on the inside of the carbs, on the motor side of the butterflies and the inlet tracts. ??? Some barsteward had butchered the drain screw for the bowl and after removing the 4 seized screws [PlusGas and patience] the water was released. ArmorAll on the rubbers and they all softened up lovely for the re-assembly, which was testing, but no bad.

Getting there, but 9 owners neglect, sitting around and only 17K km since 1998 all adds up to peeling powder coat, corrosion and not much wear.

Now runs OK and ticks over no bother, just awaiting the next little 'niggle'! ::)

Hope your set up for the season and haven't blown the motor! :-[

Cheers, Bill.
