What!? Can't believe what i am reading here.

Norton is back! You should be proud it is back in British hands and the fact someone has finally put their money where their mouth is. Personally cannot wait to see the bikes come off a British production line again.

Creating jobs and skills in what can best be described as a crappy economic climate.

As for the Pushchairs has anyone ever heard of Maclaren and obviously for the more commercial of you out there this was a failure aswell...... Get real people of course they need to maximise the brand. going from start to finish.... Good that.

Proud Norton fan. Again.....

Guess I've just seen this scenario a few too many times.  When all is said and done it is just a name, with only that linking it to the old company.

I always find it odd how motorcyclists love to attach themselves to a brand, the marketing departments must love us.

I would lay odds of about 10% that the bikes actually go into production, having said which I really hope they do.

The twin that I saw in MCN was really well styled.

I have a lot of affection for the Norton Commando especially those built by the Colorado Norton Works. However ,I feel that Norton should have done a Triumph and started with a completely new product , rather than the Commando that they appear to have .

Despite this a nice 70's interstate would still find a home in my garage , but it is what it is ..............

For anyone who's not seen it, here's a link to the new Commando...

http://www.nortonmotorcycles.com/bike/default.asp

Aside from anything else it's a lovely looking bike. I'd definitely have one if I had pots of cash.

I think robG would look rather fetching on a bright Yellow Commando Hi-Rider.
With his Drooping moustache,Bushy Side Burns, flares, purple paisley wide collared shirt unfastened to his bulging navel and large medallion beating his chest wig.

Nice looking bike, but what's their target market? Heart says Norton, head says parts bin special.

Most people old enough to want that engine wouldn't like the seating position. Anyone comparing mph per pound is going to conclude that a Ducati Monster or Bandit is better all round. Most people who are in love with the brit bike thing will be more in the market for a decent 60's/70's/Restored one, or start looking at Bullets and Bonnevilles.

If the market is millionaire, brit bike loving, naked sports bike enthusiasts they are really never going to get out of the "built in a shed stage" IMHO.

The name is still valuable, but I think looses something everytime they start up and don't make it. I really hope they can use the kiddie carts to make some cash, then launch a three bike range in the £8000 to £10000 bracket. Triumph showed the way, the BSA/MZ/Chinese 125 thing showed how to smash a brand.

I was talking to John from ADV rider in the cafe yesterday (may be about here somewhere). He has a Highland. Swedish made 900-odd cc V-twin trail bike. Imagine a more powerful, lighter, better value KTM if you would. These guys make their own engine (used in S/C MX) and are just getting past the small numbers stage by the sound of it. They have a US distributor that seems to know what he's doing and are talking to the Chinese about manufacture. The bike has two options road and off road, but they'll do you spare wheels so you can reconfigure yourself. This is a brand I expect to see in the dealers before Norton as they are undercutting KTM with a superior product to off set the unknown brand thing. They could knock up a third option (overland tourer) with a quick visit to Acerbis.

Hope they both make it.

Works for Mclaren. Suburu Washing Machine Company anyone (do they still fit the name plates?).

It's probably as good a business plan as trying to sell handmade bikes to people who can affort 15-grand or trying to convince Fireblade riders they should go rotary. To be honest though, who in the market for a monkey trolley will have a clue who Norton used to be? I think someone liked the logo.

It is a big of an ignominious end though.

Used to be Jonsereds chainsaws as well, as they were all part of the Electrolux conglomerate. ??? However, was the Husqvarna 'brand not bought by the defunct MV Augusta now ??? mob :-\

Not worried, provided the old 'Flame Thrower' gets a charge round the circuits and can win a few races, whilst the Commando is available for those who enjoy a bit of nostalgic choice! ;)

Keep bopping, Bill.

Husky also used to make - or still do - sewing machines.  Big sis has a lovely one - self loading threader and all.

As to Highlander bikes - I have a pic here of one of their engines squashed into a RS125 frame.  Looks the biz
