F650 Water pumps for Martin C

Hello, Just spotted your question in the fuel thread about F650 water pumps, so here goes:

Inside the left hand crank case cover is the waterpump and clutch. The pump has no bearing, it instead runs on the seal that separates the water and the oil. This is pure cheap and nasty design, of which Rotax, Aprillia and BMW should be heartily ashamed. At something between 1000 and 30000 miles, said seal will fail, your oil will go chocolate brown and the motor will run about 100 degrees warmer as it is now air/oil not water cooled. Like a game of stone scssors paper, the steel shaft that wrecked the seal will then be scratched to uselessness by the engine casing. You then need to buy a £40 kit from Motorworks/Motorbinns (£70 from BMW) and replace the seal and shaft before you can purge the coolant and change the oil. This takes under an hour and can be done with the engine in the bike, so it's a home job if you get your hands dirty.

If your oil is chocolate brown do it now. If your bike is over 20000 miles and never had one, get the kit in and do it when you've time. If you are 500 miles south of Gibraltar you have two choices; set fire to if there and then or ride it in air cooled mode. The second plan will warp the head and result in repairs that would cost more than the bike is worth unless you can get a spare engine. Don't ask how I know this  :'(

The chain gang has lots of info on this. It isn't a big issue if you catch it, are prepared and aren't halfway to Dakar. The other F650 build issues are the VR/heat trap and the chocolate construction used for the sump plug drain hole if I remember correctly. Nothing to worry about so long as you have fixes and/or avoiding action planned.

Andy

PS: Almost forgot to add what I've added to every BMW thread since 2004: Alan Jefferies BMW of Shipley UK are useless ****ers.

I would assume that this also applies to rotax engined Aprilia Pegaso'  :(s  and would be a possible explaination  why my mates oil looks like a cup of coffe

Andy - thanks very much for that - you have probably saved me a lot of trouble!

My bike has done 33k and I have no idea whether the oil pump seal has ever been changed, so I'll do it as soon as possible. I have just changed the oil and it was a normal colour, but I won't take a chance on it. I was aware of the other issues but somehow missed that particular one.

There are a lot of rather cheap and cheerful aspects to this bike... Perhaps I ought to swap it for another XBR  - I had one for three years a while back, and it never missed a beat.

Cheers,
Martin

I think this would apply to the Pegaso, but i honestly can't claim to be 100% sure. Rotax seem to be able to combine hideous bits on one engine and then take them off another that looks externally the same. Knowing how these companies work, it probably amounts to someone at the bike maker asking the right questions in the right meeting before anyone turns out the first life test motor. Some guy in engineering probably knew a roller bearing that'd fit right in and save 2p on the seal, but if no one asked him.....

I think a guy on the Chain gang fitted a bearing, but it was major surgery and probably best not attempted on your one and only engine.

I really was trying hard not to suggest alternative bikes  :-[ ; after my escapade I swore I'd never buy water cooled again and went to a Yam XT then the Bonneville. They all have their little issues, the F650's aren't that bad. XT's have exhausts made out of recycled Kebab wrappers that rot in a fortnight and cost about the national debt of Argentina to replace. The Bonneville was wired by a colour blind chimpanzee on acid, so you pay your money and take your pick.

Yes, the F650 is a pretty nice bike to ride when it's all working, and I doubt I'll change it now. It's got some character and it pulls like a train, with decent ground clearance and fuel economy. But why a so-called 'enduro' bike is so complex I really don't know. Surely monoshock isn't so much better than twin shock... I'm watching the re-run of Long Way Down, and so far they have changed two shocks in the middle of nowhere - no wonder they've got 3 bikes and two 4x4s.

Looks like Crewkerne is on for next year, so I hope to meet some of the guys then. I'm sure I'll get plenty of advice about these and other issues...
