Important Issue, please read
« on: November 04, 2008, 12:29:58 PM »
I made one cock-up too many recently. I received a letter that let me know in no uncertain terms that I have let down a club member whose contributions to the club have been enormous. I let this person down through incompetence on my part. Put simply, I'm really bad with the administrative tasks of the club.

The letter pulled me up short. All of the club's recent problems have been caused by me, therefore I am giving up the post of chairman. The club deserves more and will only prosper in the hands of a more capable person.

I propose restricting my contribution to general committee work and producing a regular newsletter. I will continue with the membership work until that is sorted out.

So, if anyone feels that they can take on the role then let us know. What the job requires is someone to liaise with all the committee, to handle payments, to delegate tasks and to steer the club.

We now have someone in place to handle the finances and contact with her is mostly done via email.

I'm not sad about this, I think it's the best thing for the club.

GC, It's your club, you started it.

If you feel it's totally right to join us other ranks then welcome to the heckling gallery, otherwise I for one would ask you to think again. I'd really hate to see the style of the club change just for the sake of getting things done a bit more efficiently.

3. Did you learn from the mistook? (most of us do)
4. I agree 100% with Andy M
6. we have discussed at length GC offloading some of the tasks.......lets explore these
7. And GC retains chairmanship......

Without knowing the content of the letter , and the issues raised , it is difficult to draw a conclusion as to whether your decision is right or wrong , both for you as an individual or as a clubman .However you should ask if this decision is made in an effort to avoid it happening again be it  through lack of time ,an  oversight,or whatever but definately ,I'm sure, not deliberate act, or simply because you don't want to do it anymore.
I doubt the latter some what . This club is full of great characters . If you hadn't noticed , you are one of them . We are all human { Jethro ! ? } , and mistakes are made in all walks of like . If this is the case , then learn from it and improve as a result . If the work required to carry out your admin. weighs heavy , then delegate some tasks, as we all know, and understand how tight time is , with family , pub, oh! and the occaisional involvment with motorbikes. We even fit in some work!.

There has to be some common ground here . Retain the Chairmanship and resolve the other admin issues. Handing on the Chairmanship will not prevent this happening again , only that you will not be responsible the next time.

Draw breath , old boy and think again .

Rob

PS I know what time I posted this but I've just finished work .

Ive always thought that in a club, any club the contribution whether large or small or enormous are done with the good of the club in mind and NOT for self gratification. I for one would relinquish the position I hold and pass the position on to the COMPLAINEE at a moments notice.
My branch members know this and I haven't had any challenges yet.
Graham dont give up the ghost, unless you feel the need to have a change for YOUR personal benefit or need to run elections to the given posts.
Some people believe that if a person holds position unelected ,that he or she is being dictatorial and will not give their all.  Maybe the author of the letter wants a crack at the position if he thinks he can do it better. My bet is he will pull his head in and wimp out!
Whatever dont let it get to you!!! OK??

I have in the past made a comments on this topic on the forum, the response at the time was negative so I have subsequently kept my views on the matter quiet.
Just to make sure theres no confusion, the letter Graham refers to did not originate from me.

In my opinion Graham, handing off administrative roles would be a good idea. However, I think that there ought to be some recognition of the contribution you made in founding the club - chairman seems reasonable as it fits with what you're good at. That sorted it is just a case of  stop sulking, pussy footing about and being all guilty and get on with fulfilling that role.

Most of us (I think) know that admin is not your thing and that you have turned last minute chaos into an art form but so what. It's like riding a bike, well a solo anyway, you've had a spill (minor one) and now it's time to forget the bruises and get back on and open the throttle.

In short: you're It!!

Nor from me. I think if Graham doesn't want to be Chairman any longer, we should respect that, but perhaps give him the honorary office of Life President instead. That's provided he sends me a bl**dy newsletter ;-)

Have a good long think GC. Was it your chairmanship that lead to the complaint or your [lack of] admin skills?? We here don't know the nature of the complaint, but could the issue have been avoided if you had had greater admin support?

My point is (and always has been) there maybe some issues around organisation and administration, but you're a very good conduit for the club, a figure head, spokesman, a chairman. Just look at the resurgence in the forum and the amount of traffic generated since you've become an active partisipant again!

Your call buddy, but try to keep a focus on the issues.

PS

I must admit to being a tad curious as to what you could have done to upset someone so much in such an informal organisation as this!! ???

Jees, I thought we were all mates having a bit of a larf. Poke a bit of fun at each other every now and then, but at the end of the day, lets have a beer and get on with getting on. ;)

Heyho (sigh)

One member has proposed this solution:

You must remain as Chairman of the Thumper Club; continuing to act as a focal point of the Club. As Chairman you would have very little responsibility within the club other than acting as a figurehead, writing a regular column for the Newsletter, being a catalyst/thorn-in-the-side in equal measure, and strangely chairing Club management meetings.

There should then be four other administrative posts that co-ordinate the activities of the Thumper Club between them. They would be as follows:

Thumper Club Secretary – overall responsibility for the Club (including membership & merchandise), and first financial signatory.

Thumper Club Treasurer – responsible for all financial matters relating to the Club, and second financial signatory.

Thumper Newsletter Editor

Thumper Club Webmaster

The Chairman plus the four new posts would effectively be a steering committee for the Club. I don't think The Thumper Club is the type or size of organisation that needs anything more than that.

[/i]

I think that's a good way of doing business with limited scope for damage due to my wayward nature.

Thoughts?

I am certainly in favour of Richard's Life President suggestion. . But whatever happens GC, don't beat yourself up too much about things. It's down to you, and folk like you, that I have this band of ne'er-do-wells to call my mates. Thank you.
