Windows 98

I have been asked to get an old mates computer on line for him. He has Windows 98 installed but BT internet told him he needs windows 98 series 2. I have never heard of this version. My question is, does anyone one have a version 2 they want to sell. I dint think ME is very reliable and feel sure his PC wont run XP

He probably needs Windows 98SE (Second Edition)

I've had a copy knocking around here for years but typically I can't find it anywhere now. I'll let you know if it turns up.
If it's any use I can get you a copy of Windows 2000 or XP. Send me a PM if you need one.

Don't use Windows Millenium, it's awful.

I was thinking he must mean 98SE also. I will PM you my details and if you find it would buy it from you . I dint think I better use a copy of XP as he would never sleep with worry.

I know this sounds like chicken and egg stuff....but....

1. can you get the pc online ( does it have a network port?) can you get it online at your place?
if you can, then go to windows (microsoft) updates.....this will update to Second Edition....takes a while, but worth the effort, because.....
2. If you go for a fresh build of 98SE/ME/2000 you will need the CD that came with the PC/mainboard, which holds the drivers for the services provided on the motherboard.....graphics/sound/network/usb/ etc etc....if you can't find this cd, the drivers can usually be downloaded from the manufacturer, to do this you will need details which can be found printed on the motherboard

The above can be avoided by using an UPGRADE version....which retains all the original settings and programs and data

Yes i am told the PC has all ports and it was just this Win 98 spec that was lacking. Just that  BT wont let him have the modem unless it meets certian requirments. I dont mind helping but  as far as I understand should be able to do a clean install of Win98SE.

98SE doesn't contain many device drivers whereas XP and 2000 include a lot of the more common ones. If you do a clean install it'll prompt you to insert driver disks if it needs them. If you don't have the disks and can't find them on the manufacturers websites try www.driverguide.com it's a brilliant site.

It sounds as if you might be able to just upgrade to 98SE though. That'd be a lot less hassle than starting from scratch.
