I know this sounds like chicken and egg stuff....but....
1. can you get the pc online ( does it have a network port?) can you get it online at your place?
if you can, then go to windows (microsoft) updates.....this will update to Second Edition....takes a while, but worth the effort, because.....
2. If you go for a fresh build of 98SE/ME/2000 you will need the CD that came with the PC/mainboard, which holds the drivers for the services provided on the motherboard.....graphics/sound/network/usb/ etc etc....if you can't find this cd, the drivers can usually be downloaded from the manufacturer, to do this you will need details which can be found printed on the motherboard
The above can be avoided by using an UPGRADE version....which retains all the original settings and programs and data
