non-thumper; car glass replacement
« on: June 20, 2008, 02:23:20 PM »
hello all,

have been rather quiet of late- work busy, racebike busy, blah blah blah.

compounding this is the fact that I went to get some stuff from the van last night, in the street.  It had to happen eventually- the toerags have done in the quarterlight, had a mooch about, and pissed off.   >:(

They didn't take anything (nothing really there!) though I'm not sure whether to be pleased or offended that my CDs (mostly some "quality" 70s rock!) were left...!  Anyway, no real harm done, they were probably wondering what was in that old ambulance.  Hopefully now they know and will leave it alone!

Anyway.  I've found a quarterlight at the right price.  I know it can be replaced using a piece of string, and I can see the theory behind it (ie pull out the string to spread the rubber, and the glass should be happy in between the two).  But has anyone done this?

Can you talk me thru it please??  Sorry to clutter up the forum with mundane rubbish, off-list is fine- my email is

a[dot]duncan[at]ich[dot]ucl[dot]ac[dot]uk

Cheers....!

Never done it Andy - so no idea really.  However when I used to make glazing guns for the railways we used to supply lubricant to help get the glass into the rubber.  It needs to be water based so it will not rot the rubber. - Think  baby oil and condoms leading to fatherhood... lol

What we supplied was glycerine in a nice can, but I guess ultrasound gel would do a good job.  Tyre mounting lube may - but it is a lot thicker than we used to supply.  Guess KY would do as well.

Mind I bear no responsibility for any of these things causing more problems than they solve :)

Were you at Pembrey a few weeks ago - I was going to come down but was shattered and slept instead.
