alpine trip & africa tw%n question
« on: July 28, 2007, 06:42:53 PM »
Hello all!!

Im in milan!  Ace trip down thru france and over the alps.  Over to Padua on monday.  No problems bar a snapped clutch cable on thursday, quickly sorted

Quick question for thoose in the know-

On the AT, its fine cold, but when it warms up theres a distinct "clack" from I think one of the top ends.  Nothin awful, but I am certain its there.  SteveH et al, it sound like the clackity top end on my racer (lumpy cam)

Only appears when warm!

Im thinking a noisy tappet...  in which case it should be fine till I get back (approx 2000 miles, its done 1000 already on the wa down, and is probably getting a bit noisier)

Thus my post!

Anyone know of any hideous weknesses which this points to on this motor?  Im loath to fuck about with anything other than in my garage!  Sounds a bit like light piston slap but this would be when cold and disappear when hot.  Ditto tappets Id have thought.  It appears after 5 mins.  No loss of performance, still good on m-ways and back raods two up over the BIG hills!

Cheers.  I will ignore it unless anyone can provide a decent answer, and will post again if the motor goes BANG  :o

see you soon, sorry I missed the rally, I was quaffing pinneau in a chateu near bordeaux...!

best,

a

ps. bill, seen the G50-a-like on that page you mentioned.  Lovely, I emeiled the guy, but no response.  Looks like FZR kit on that too....

Andy, I suspect you are looking for problems that arent there, if you were more familiar with the engine you probabaly would notice it. Since theres sod all you can do about it so just relax and enjoy the holiday.
Might sound daft but wearing ear plugs might help, I'm always horrified how awful the DR sounds if I ride without ear plugs, but then after a few miles you get used to it.

hello

Will post on the xrv forum, but steve I suspect you are right.  I am a terminal worrier!!!  (just registered using my work address, to find that my work account is down.  Grrrr!!!)

Must be said, it is a feckin brilliant bike!  Me and the (admitedly tiny) missus but lots of luggage.  Relentless battering on the motorway made me nervous, thinking about blowing up a mates motor, but it does seem to run ok.

90, 2 up.  Happy.  modern kit is amazing!  I now dunno how I did the same trip, same luggage and pillion on a 650 norton 5 years ago.  I must have been seriously nuts!

Oh, and we did drop it (at 0 mph), and couldnt lift it!  Friendly passing french biker took pity and the 3 of us just about got it vertical.  Crash bars and full panniers rock!

cheers

Don't worry, that's the same motor as in several other Hondas, and it has a reputation for a sort of ticking from the front cam chain. Which can go on and on for 200,000 miles.

Ear plugs are definately the answer. On the way back from Dent I was convinced that the SRX was about to detonate. Only to discover that I had forgotten to put my ear plugs in. What you can't hear you won't worry about (as much).
