srx400 top end gasket set
« on: March 09, 2026, 08:16:18 PM »
with spring upon us it's time for me to sort out my oil burning 400. so, off comes the barrel and off to the engineers for a rebore, out to the size of my +50 piston.

the sticky problem will be the rebuild, going to need a top end gasket set... in reality just a head gasket will do and a set of exhaust rings (which are the same as the 600 so not an issue.)

has anyone sourced a gasket kit for 400's

it may be that the existing gasket will be ok, i'll find out tomorrow...

Aye SteveL, apologies for a delayed reply to this plea for assistance.

Fleabay Lot No.: 296512993468

BUT! Just shy of £100 for a head gasket seems extortionate. Especially, when there will be an import duty, VAT add-on above that and if they are shipping rather than flying, the delay could be worse.

I have dealt with the seller some years ago and I was very pleased with the condition of the 2nd-hand parts I purchased, packaging, etc., so I don't think quality should be a problem.

Alternative is "Yoshi Parts" in Japan, here is the link, with GB selected as the destination and P+P costs, but NO import duty that I can see.

Fowlers, Bristol, need to order one, but appears to be still available. Price inc VAT = £66-68 + P&P Nae cheap! But for convenience, the best a bor can get.  ;)

Trust that you and yours are all chipper?

Good health, BillR

thanks for the (usual) comprehensive reply Bill.

i have managed to get the head & barrel off now, obviously never been off b4, and surprisingly the gaskets are in very good condition!

so i won't be needing to spend the kids inheritance after all.

i can get an aftermarket 600 gasket set which will give me the seals for the valves.

the bore & piston appear to be in good nick, very little signs of blow by, but i will leave that to the experts to determine whether a +50 rebore is worth it. but the +50 piston i have is NOS, so it'd be a shame not to use it.

i had huge problems getting the barrel off, one of the alloy (why on earth were they used??) long nuts had been 'wrung'. i.e. the hex head was almost round!

so had to drill between the fins, than spend a good half day with a hacksaw blade and an inch of reciprocating movement to cut it off.

am now left with an inch & a half stud to extract... but as the rebore eta is a month it'll give me a while to think about it...

i have managed to get a 10mm nut onto the very bu55ered thread, but not enough thread for a second nut & washer, so, it looks like i'll have to weld the nut on, not ideal.

and there we have it... the offending tooth is extracted ....

now i can get on with the head refurb & wait for the barrel to come back with a shiny new +50 bore & piston.

might, with a bit of luck & following wind be back on the road by the end of april

Looking good Steve.  ;D

I have to admit to delinquacy these past two days. Yesterday was spent chilling up in Glen Quaich watching the peewit, curlew, oyster catcher and redshank displaying and sorting out their breeding territories. No raptors this time, but the toads and frogs have started migrating toward their breeding lochans. All with a balmy sou'westerly, but no sign of a grouse! Chiffchaff at the house yesterday, first warbler of the year and the osprey is back at Loch O' the Lowes yesterday.

Today, the Revere 600 was out for a spin through the north coast of Fife, to have a spy on the first lambs. Cold easterly today and the RAF playing at 50,000' plus from the con trails, just hope it was practise and not some silly sod spook! Typhoons and the "Eggbeater" been busy at "0 feet" over the house recently .......  ;D ;D ;D

Off to the Inner Hebrides for the eqinox lion exit next week.

Good health, Bill

Good to read the bees are gadding and a shame that you lost a hive. Since my neighbour stopped keeping bees, we only have escapees visiting the garden, but we still see them. Same up here with the white arsed queens on the hellibores, grape hyacinths and their favourite the winter flowering Erica (bell heather). That lovely sonorous buzz! Also a peacock and a tortoishell butterfly.

Off to do some sorting out.

Slainte, Bill
