Back road heaven
« on: September 10, 2025, 07:14:25 PM »
As big bro has briefly mentioned in another thread upon this here site, we, that’s myself, big bro and a good mate of ours went on a 400 mile round trip to Moffat & back over the weekend. We took the “uncharted” route there & back down. Taking in 99% unclassified roads. I went on the Cb250rs, big bro on his Enfield scram 411
and our mate on his “big bore” 😁150cc Suzuki GS125. All three bikes ran faultlessly, well apart from the left had side indicators on the RS which decided to flash, only when they were in the mood. Most likely a dodgy earth connection I think 🤔.
It rained very heavy for the last 20miles both getting there and then coming home. However our spirits weren’t dampened. It was a great weekend’s riding.
Cheers, Michael

Great stuff.

It always amazes me how quiet these back roads can be.

I also like to find these roads when I'm out in our sports car but it's never the same due to the greater width of the car.

There are miles and miles of these roads which is great if you have the time to explore and no where in particular to go.

Yes Martin, extremely quiet, considering we did at least 170 miles there and then back on the unclassified roads. Obviously the pace is very steady, partly the bikes we were on, but mainly because the roads are so small and narrow. Still great fun though. We’d go for miles without even seeing a car in certain places. Definitely would like to do it again 🤞👍

Yes a cracking, memorable run. I recorded a round trip total 395 miles. I worked out a route that kept us pretty much entirely on unclassified roads. We took in some high passes, then in valleys where one could revel in the thrump of the engine. A one night stay  in the Buccleuch Arms Hotel in Moffat then back home the next day. Basically just riding for the sake of riding and taking all day to do so. Marvellous. It is tiring after a day in the saddle, but very fulfilling.

Sounds just brilliant, Moffat is a lovely little place and there can be no better excuse to go to a lovely place than just to ride a simple bike on some wee roads. Excellent encourgement to do some 'just because' touring next year.

EH! There are still 112 days afore the end of this year yet to go!

Go on, go and get it clarty and have a dirty weekend like those Yorkshire loons from Lancashire!  ;D

Pleased that you all had a safe and interesting trundle, not! ;) Knowing you two hooligans and A nother, it would have been at a brisk canter, even with a 125 thumpette involved in the plot. ;)

Is the Buccleuch still a reasonable watering hole? Last time I was in, the menu was nothing special. But then the Indian opposite, in the cellar, was always my eating favourite, seconded by the steak pie, peas and chips in the Balmoral Hotel, with a high tea in The Star a close third.

Good health to you all, Bill

Hi Bill

You're right and I do indeed go out when its clarty, dreich, in smirr or when I get drookit ( words supplied by a Scottish friend, I hope they're right ) but I meant I would be doing longer tours next year after my little health blip. Too many great roads to ignore especially in Scotland.

Cheers Ian

Bill…. The Buccleuch arms is a great hotel for bikers, without doubt. Drying room for wet gear, bike sheds to store one’s mosheen overnight. Always clean and tidy, if a tad basic. ( which personally doesn’t bother me)
They’ve “brought back” a couple of things to their menu, the Buccleuch burger being one of them. The full “Scottish” breaky always goes down a treat before the long ride back down south 😁
We’ve been going for 13yrs now and got to know Dave and some of the other staff pretty well.
Hopefully we’ll be going back for a few more yrs to come 🤞
Cheers.. Michael
