Super singles!

Hi all

Just thought I'd drop you a quick line to say 'cheers' for a superb site.

I have recently got hold of a couple of 250cc singles (a Suzuki GN and a Yam SR) very cheap from ebay and am having loads of fun working on them and blatting about the countryside.

Okay, they don't make huge amounts of power and top speed is a realistic 70mph, but I haven't enjoyed myself so much on two wheels for years!  I've not tinkered with bikes so much in years either - I had forgotten how much fun (and frustrating!) it can be.

After years of riding all sorts of bikes (from the humble C90 through to the GPZ1100) these little chaps (especially the GN as I am still sorting the Yam) prove that you can have top fun chugging along country lanes and enjoying the whole biking experience (the sights, sounds and smells, etc), rather than head down going as fast as you can from A to B cursing every other road user who gets 'in the way'.

Long live the single!

Jason

Enjoyment is the product of

S*E*H*R*M where S is the speed that you and your bike are happy, E is the environment you are in (affects S) H is the handling of the bike, R is the rider skill and M is the moment in time.  If any of these tend to zero the whole answer tends to zero.  So if you have a hyper sports bike but the moment is not right - tends to no enjoyment.  I think something like a single hits pretty high on all factors all the time - travels fast enough to be fun not so fast that a sheep stepping out 2 miles away is a hazard, whether you are in town or in the country - the single is fun - about the only place E tends to zero is on a motorway or long dual carriage way - and then it tends to zero for all bikes, H - singles tend to be light and within the capabilities of their frame at all engine speeds - handling tends to be good, R - rider skill is a factor but less so than on a crotch rocket or the like - most have the skill to ride a single tolerably well, as opposed to squeaky bottom time every 2 miles.  The Moment in time - they take longer to get somewhere - so a good ride lasts longer, they talk to you ands all of that - the moment happens more often.

Mind I did love riding the RD5

I've had a GN250 for work for the last couple of years during which time it's proved very reliable if not exactly exciting. If your interested a few tips on Gn ownership-

1) Check the oil!  they tend to use rather a lot which seems to be normal
2) Check the oil
3) If it's got both of the sidepanels, consider drilling and cable tying them to the frame as they have a habit of falling off (especially the right hand - battery - side) and they are hard to get hold of and they are expensive....I found this out from a New Zealand website just after my right hand panel fell off!....
4) Get some sort of chain oiler as they can destroy chain & sprockets pretty quickly if you don't. Loobman oilers are cheap and effective.
5)Check the oil!!!
Growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional!

Not seen this before. Sums it up quite well.
