Throttle tube and grip...XBR500
« on: December 09, 2011, 03:43:07 PM »
Hi to all...the bike prob is. My throttle tube is cracked badly and i have a new one from Dave Silver. I cant seem to find a way to get some slack on the cables to take them off to replace the tube. In all my years of tinkering this is one of those things I've never done before. I guess there will be a obvious nut or screw I've overlooked  ::) Daylight fading fast so going to stick it back together again  ???

                                                                                                                            Thanks.......Pete.

The manual just says to remove the switchgear screws and disconnect the cables. You should be able to get a bit of slack from the cable adjusters on the switch housing which may be enough, otherwise you might have to disconnect at the carb which is a real pain.  The handlebar weights can be a bu99er to get out too! :(

Thanks Steve, that's about as far as i got . Handle bar weight off easy enough..it seemed to me the cables were at minimal adjustment.so no slack to be gained from either end.Thought about recking the cracked tube to free the cables then thought if i cant replace them, not enough slack, i will be getting a lot more exercise on the way to work.. :(

Can't you take the handlebars off, or loosen them and swivel them around?

Wouldn't that do the trick?

Okay...took housing apart, took handle bar off, slid tube off, still left with too much tension on cables.Tried to twist tube out and...snap!Last bit of plastic holding it together broke off. >:( Tried everything to get the cables back in the slots but just cant seem to get enough play to get one or the other in.There is no adjustment at either end.Now off the road and walking until i can get the bu99ers back on again..to top it all it started to rain and get dark again.. ::) HELP!!!!

                                                                                               Regards  Pete.

I've just checked my spare throttle cables. When you say there is no adjustment, do you mean there are no actual adjusters or that the adjuster at the throttle end is wound right up to the curved cable guide?  There should be about 15mm of adjustment at the throttle end and 25mm or more at the carb end. If the adjuster is wound right up at the throttle end ( as in the picture) then you'll have to disconnect the cable at the carb end as all of the slack must have been taken up there.

I've changed throttle cables before and I don't remember it being that difficult so something must be wrong somewhere.

Good pic Steve...afraid so..at the throttle end its as tight as a gnats chuff as in picture, to ease the free play. At the other end by the carb there  doesn't seem to be anything to be gained. Original cables i believe. There must be a logical answer to a simple cable fit.Guess what i would like for Xmas... ::)

Something odd going on here  :-\  My adjusters are adjusted about half way at both ends.  There is an 'A' and 'B' throttle cable for opening and closing but I've just had a look and apart from the fact that the 'B' cable doesn't have an adjuster at the top, I can't see much between them, they seem to be the same length.  You have no adjustment at the carb end at all?
Are you sure they're the right cables? I think you need to get the tank off and have a look at the carb end of the cable as there should be plenty of adjustment there.
Wemoto stock them, but they're £13  each... :-\ or a pair of used ones on Ebay for a tenner if they're ok.

Will have a look Monday after work...sounds like a tank off job. Hate doing that as the side panels are kept on by tie wraps both sides through the tank lug hole...but it works.I might try taking the cables off and screwing the throttle end in a few turns at the housing join as this seems to be the only part with a bit of thread left to play with.Weather not looking to good for Tuesday and Thursday next week though... :o

Forgive me for what i have done...but, after a bit more of a play it seemed to me the throttle worked fine ye olde school, one cable to pull and snap shut.So i cut my losses and the push cable.now running on one cable as we used to.The only thing i can remember about the push cable is that it was a fail safe... :o  Hope i haven't made the H&S miss a beat but why the push? Will sort out properly when the storm passes and Xmas....hopefully.

                                                                      Thumping again.....Pete. ;D

I really don't know Pete, but at least you've got going.  One thing, just be a bit careful running a single cable, I did the same thing years ago on an SP370 and it did work, but sometimes the throttle was a bit slow shutting off, it didn't always 'snap' if you see what I mean

Thanks Steve ...i realise its not an ideal solution and will be aware of the response for a while.Needs must and all that, the weather being seasonal. Maybe a new set of wemotto cables and a good strip down in the new year and lighter warmer weather.Until then,i will thump my way through winter once again...LOVE IT!! ;D

Now that you've cut the old one off, you can measure it and make up a new one a centimetre longer. The cable and terminals are available from any pushbike shop. Assemble everything, splay the cable ends, heat them a bit, dip in acid flux, then in molten plumbers' solder.
