When do you call it a day on your bike?

My lovely SRX I think may have come to the end of its natural life. It has yet again given up wanting to work much to my annoyance having just (less than 600miles) put 2 new tyres on it.

The starter is making the most awful sound that is like metal being slapped against metal. It will screech on like this graduy getting quieter and quieter, then once the noise stops, the bike starts?! The motor is spinning and turning over the engine all the time. I have taken the left engine cover off and can see no damaged bits. The starter 'looks' fine with a brief visual inspection of its internals. Cant  fathom out that one.

And, it has tried to kill me a few times by accelerating on its own! I believe that is caused by the CV carb diaphragm being a little stiff now and flexing itself upwards lifting the slide on its own and away it goes upto 7000rpm with a closed throttle.  :o Now I know what kill switches are for.
The diaphragm was changed by NRP 5-6 years ago, but the bike was standing for 4.5 years after that so didn't help.

So, the cost of fixing the carb (+ a new throttle cable), new starter + whatever else is malfunctioning, oh and the brakes need new rubber seals etc etc and it all starts to add up. The bike only cost £800 eight years ago.

Or shall I go buy a brand new YBR125 for £1800 that 120mpg to commute on? I like that idea especially with go-go juice nudging £1.20 a litre.

So, is it worth trying to fix it again? Yes of course it is, I cant stop myself...but I will need that YBR first to get to work on.
