Knowing how well some of you are in holding E Bay and PayPal in high esteem, on the national television news, Oz is being used a a guinea pig for the local market and the results will affect the rest of the world.

E bay has introduced a scheme of "pay pal "only for transactions netting them millions of $A  by eliminating cheques and other forms of payment.
The locals (up to 5 million) are up in arms over the "greedy"  E bay.

Ebay reckon its a security measure.

Anybody seriously selling via Ebay may want to "let them know how you feel about this if it will effect your dealings with them.

I noticed recently that I had to offer Paypal payment because of my low feedback count (97). So I suppose this is a step in that direction.

I doubt they can insist on Paypal under the banking or competition regs. The court case would be interesting.

I had this conversation with the wedding venue. They don't accept personal cheques, which is fine as these are in effect an unsecured IOU. They charge 6% for credit cards and are allowed to because that's what AMEX/VISA etc. charge them. They accept a bankers cheque because they choose to and charge nothing for a debit card because it's like cash. They accept cash because they have a contract and any court in the country would say they were taking the **** if they claimed non-payment after I offered a wad of fifties! They don't want the pile of paper but they really have to take it.

I think E-bay would get stung if they went any further than making it harder to not use Paypal than use it.

it could be the work of higher forces.

all paypal payments leave a trail of evidence for the tax man!

i don't think that there is a government in the world that would turn down the offer of quite a few million quid extra.
however much they get they can easily fritter away twice as much with no visible benifits!

also paypal is e-bay owned, so its a bit like running a shop where you only accept money printed by you (a tenner costs you £12 and so on).

i rarely use debit or credit cards as i don't want 'the man' knowing everything i do.
i'm not doing anything dodgy i just don't want them tracking me.
