Very much non-thumper

I had a little thought the other day and wondered if it could make sense.

The path down to my garage is pretty dark at night and I could do with some of those motion sensor path lights to guide my way. Then I considered those silly little solar powered lights and thought: if I rigged up a 12v battry in the garage with a small solar panel to charge it, wouldn't that be sufficent to run some small 12v path lamps triggered by a motion sensor?

I'm guessing that they would be triggered for 10 minutes a night at the most, so would a small solar battery charger be sufficent to keep pace with that?

Aye GC,

I'd say 'go for it', but other more knowledgable 'sparkies' may disagree.

Alternative would be to collect glow worms in jam jars and hang them from cleft sticks beside the path! Trouble with that is it's getting cold and they can't cuddle up beneath a duvet and it would obscure the glow if they did!

Cheers, Bill

Might work if the lights are not too powerful, I am under the impression that solar panels are expensive and will just produce a trickle charge to the battery.

What's wrong with a nice torch ?

whats wrong with the 240v thats supplied to your house???

Cheap PIR are only £8 and some bulk head lamps on stakes look good, well i think so about the ones on my drive.

well #1, as it 'appen lad, I have done just that. I live in the country and when it's dark it's DARK, and the area inside and outside the front gate is inky black at night, and visitors just can't find their way up to the house (some would say that's a good thing). had cogitated about running mains out to the gate and mounting a light on a pole, or getting an old victorian street light, but it all seemed too much hassle.....so.....as i spend most days dealing with electronics in one form or another i thought i'd try brains instead of brawn.
somewhere down the line i had obtained one of those large opaque round white light globes, so i turned up a wooden base for it and mounted it on an 8' oak post.
inside are 48 superbright led's (the really bright bu55ers that are available now) cheap as chips now, i also had a solar battery top up charger (which i mounted just below the light, on the post), also on the post is a 12v pir, quite small and cheap, and an ldr (light dependant resistor) inside the globe, underneath the led array is a small(ish) rechargeable lead acid gel-cell.....bingo, a self sustaining automatic light which only operates between dusk and dawn.....blummin bright too........long winded as usual

I was going to ask why not LEDs - you are not wanting pure white light, then some bloke who knows what he is talking about beats me to it! - Sounds just what we need on our drive too - apart from a gate to stop the dogs going off to see who is in the woods / on the path etc.

BTW GC - when are you coming over to look and laugh at the work that needs done / drink tea / laugh till you have an embarrasing accident at the bikes etc etc - The Boss is starting to get on to me about the leaking loo... I think not knowing if it is going to collapse when you use it adds a little zip to going to the loo and deals with constipation too.
