To GB or not to GB
« on: May 31, 2007, 04:52:48 PM »
OK here's one for all you Europhile experts: does one have to display a GB sticker when on the continent and if so where does one mount it on a bike the mudguard of which ends under the rear number plate?

It's something that I have been thinking about for a while, I think I need a life....

You should display a GB sticker... Unless you have one of the "new" style euro plates.

Personally I put a mini GB sticker below my number plate (just!) but afaik any flat rear facing surface will do. TBH though I think the police have (mostly) more important things to worry about!

I made a CYM sticker just to be different (well outside Wales anyway!).

i got back from a jaunt round france last month. it seems that hardly any foreign vehicle displays their appropriate sticker.
i cut down a car gb sticker and slapped it on the back of my top box, needless to say it was full of bubbles.

Yep. I use a CYM (Cymru) sticker too.

If you do a search on the bay for a seller called 'Isaydingdong', he sells some neat black and silver CYM stickers (and most other nationalities too).

Cheers

My problem is that there is no where on the back of the Skorpion to stick the little beggar

For Holland it'll do in the luggage, the police don't care ,only the in-sewer-ants will use it to squirm if the worst happens and then I bet they'll find better reasons if they are that way out.

If you were heading the wrong side of the pyrenees or far enough south/east where they don't pay their coppers, there are two options. Get a new plate with the EU stars and GB in the centre or display the GB. It only has to be visible from the rear which means you can put it on your luggage or your self.

How about laminating a sticker and making some sort of clear pocket that'll hold it in your back pack/cargo net/ relective belt?

BTW, Forget about the fire extinguisher and triangle too, nowhere civilised expects you to carry them. The bulb kit is important to French coppers as they traditionally got a cut from any garage they called out to replace a bulb and old habits stick long after the bribes have gone. The first aid kit is useful to yourself, so I carry one. Headlight deflectors depend on your lights and when you'll ride. If it's daylight/summer only and your running light is just that, I don't bother. Tape will do if someone does claim your dazzling.

Which reminds me... apparently headlamp converters are required for Holland, but I didn't see any while I was over there(!?) It is however in their laws that you MUST use dipped headlamps at all times on the bike...
Oh yeah and I'm told that filtering is the same there as here, neither legal or illegal, in Germany however it is illegal, confused yet? :P

Headlamp converters are mandatory in france too, along with compulsory headlights, but almost nobody bothers with them.
Seaferries have a bloke who walks up and down the line warning people that police are prosecuting people for not having them and would they like to buy a set at a tenner a go and that tape isnt legal. I laugh as I finish taping up my headlights with duct tape...

Ever seen an SZR headlamp on dipped? It blinds owls who are 50 feet up and p**ses car drivers right off! Rubbish for riding at night, another excuse not to do so when there is a beer in the fridge...

It could be worse, it could be a standard 6v magneto headlight on a sp400, its not like it actually blinds anyone, the light just comes out the reflector and falls on the floor by the front wheel. I crossed the cat n fiddle at 2am in the mist using one of them, and ran off the road 3 times and nearly ended up down a huge drop on one of the occasions. Memories of that are why my XT has to be 12v...

You can blag a free gb sticker from the company that you use to cross the channel with usually, just be prepared to spend the rest of the trip advertising seafrance or p&o or the like :D
Speed ferries dont... tight buggers, but then they are silly cheap for cars and vans...

Ahh had a DT125(ish) with no battery etc - and an agitated glow worm for a light - was interesting - but not as interesting as coming over Dartmoor on the Triton one night - twin Cibie's burning up the night when phut - the vibes got to the fuse and DARKNESS!!!!!!!

Made it to Tavistock on a glimmering pilot light (did not know the problem at this point and was too dark) - and the nice police man helped me find the fault and lent me a fuse out of the box of bits in the station.

Same bike, offset front wheel due to Commando disk front end in Dommie yokes - dropping down towards the Tamar at Gunnislake through the bends in the trees when I realised that the throttle was stuck open due to ice in the cable...  Do not think I ever took the hairpins and the bridge sooo fast again.
